Lohbrunner, June 23, langford, victoria bc

Join us at Lohbrunner Community Farm in Langford (near Victoria), BC for a farm tour, fence care work party, discussion on cooperatives, and potluck social!

Come out to and join members of the Lohbrunner Community Farm Cooperative here at our farm to get a taste of what it’s like to farm as part of cooperative! We will share the details of our unique land stewarding situation here and the unique way of farming that goes with it. There will be farmers who run commercial market gardens at Lohbrunner, as well as founding Coop members to talk about many aspects of getting a project like this going (and keeping it going!).

We will also have a short work party, in which you can help us reclaim a section of our fence from our native plant hedgerow (which we love for it’s many benefits)! Please bring long handled loppers, pruning, or hand saws if you have them to help with this task. We recommend labelling them with your name and number to make sure they go home with you.

Lohbrunner Community Farm Cooperative

Lohbrunner Community Farm is a beautiful 13 acre property within the municipality of Langford, BC. It is held in trust with Farm Folk City Folk, and managed by the Lohbrunner Community Farm Cooperative. Our mission is to steward this land, providing long term, affordable leases of farmland to farmers, as well as to contribute to the food security of the Westshore and Greater Victoria. We farm organically, and hope to help our community connect with where (some of) its food comes from.

I, Ariella, am one of the farming members of Lohbrunner, and I lease 2 acres of land here on which I operate Sweet Acres Farm.

We are a cooperatively run farm. There are 2 farmers who run commercial market gardens, as well as a group of homesteaders who grow as subsistence farmers for themselves. We also have cooperative parts of the farm – berries, a u-pick pumpkin patch, and new this year, a u-pick flower patch! We also have one member who is doing some trials growing True Potato Seed.

The work party will be to reclaim a section of our deer fence from the encroaching native hedgerow, and will be facilitated by Scott Harris.

The discussion on cooperatives will be to answer questions and give some insight on what it is like to farm within this type of cooperative – both the good things and the challenges! This will be facilitated by Ariella Falkowski, Diana Brubaker.
