JOB: VICTORIA, BC – Victoria Community Food Hub Society, Operations Manager

The Victoria Community Food Hub Society is seeking a full-time Operations Manager for the new “Kitchen Connect” Facility!

Victoria Community Food Hub Society (VCFHS) is working to develop vital regional infrastructure, programs and services that not only increase the distribution of good healthy local food to the community, but also build a stronger resilient food economy that supports farmers, processors and food distribution services.  

A major project launched in 2021 was the creation of a regionally significant Food Hub.  Newly branded Kitchen Connect is a facility envisioned to include:  a commercial kitchen, HACCP ready kitchen, two food processing lines, teaching and training spaces, refrigerated and dry storage areas.  The Hub will offer food skills training programs, a social enterprise using the fruits of the trainees, facility rentals of commercial and teaching kitchens, processing space, incubator space, storage, meeting and event space, industry specific business development services.  

In the initial stages the Operations Manager will work closely with the Development Manager to  complete construction of the food hub and implement systems to develop the second year facilities upgrades and plans.  Ongoing the role will include the safe and efficient running of the food hub, developing operating procedures and providing monitoring and oversight for the many activities at the food hub.  This will include collaborating with local food system participants to connect them with the support they need to create, grow, and scale local food businesses.

The Operations Manager works with the Victoria Community Food Hub Society’s and the Good Food Network collaborative leadership model which capitalizes on the expertise within current actors in our food system. The coordinator works collaboratively with the Partners Advisory Board, other VCFHS employees and contracted project leads. The Manager provides consistency and credibility for the organization by delivering the core operational functions of the food hub in a safe, efficient, reliable and inclusive manner. 

The Food Hub Operations Manager will be an entrepreneurial, team player who is excited about supporting local food businesses to incubate and thrive. This role is part relationship/community building and part facilities management with operational oversight of the facility and a small team. You will have a hand in developing, creating and implementing systems to ensure the food hub is welcoming, operational, clean, safe and profitable.   The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who enjoys working with their peers, is detail-oriented, has a strong focus on building relationships in the food community and experience in the workings of  a commercial kitchen or processing center. 

Role and Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the general supervision of the Administrator, the OM will work with the VCFHS to implement and oversee the vision and growth of the Kitchen Connect. The OM’s main responsibilities encompass  oversight of safety and operations of Kitchen Connect.  This will include duties related to ensuring health and safety regulations and Standard Operating Procedures are developed and in place, oversee facility use and rentals including the use of e-platforms, oversight of  acquisition implementation, monitoring and repairing processing lines and equipment.  Financial Management, including fundraising and budgeting, and reporting.   Hiring, evaluation and Kitchen team management. Supporting Work Experience, Training and Business Development programming. The OM also works cohesively with the South Island Farmhub Warehouse Manager and the Mustard Seed Manager to ensure smooth operations. In addition, the OM is also responsible to work as part of the VCFHS team.  As a small organization with a broad mandate, at times the GM will undertake work that is in support of organizational priorities. This includes participating in weekly team meetings, strategic planning sessions, training and professional development, supporting contractors and volunteers, and various activities that nurture the organization, its volunteers, and its partners.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Joining this  project in its developmental stage, you will have the opportunity to  shepherd the facility through its startup phase and opening months and to use your creativity and knowledge of the food sector and business expertise to develop sustainable facilities operations for processing infrastructure and build capacity for the local food system.

As a part of the development team you will be facilitating development of the facility by assisting with systems development, being responsible for implementation of project plan and budget, and facilitating the smooth implementation of the technology interface. Health and Safety will be a major focus and responsibility to ensure that all activities meet the requirements and have Standard operating procedures in place and that users are properly trained and monitored.

The OM will oversee direction and help to build the vision of the Kitchen Connect.  You will  work in collaboration with staff and the VCFHS board to be the brand ambassador, oversee outreach and engagement communications plans, and provide evaluation and reporting.

Ongoing the work will include fiscal management of the social venture including pursuing new revenue streams.  You would be responsible for creating and overseeing the budgets, accessing grants, tracking and growing sales and the long term sustainability of Kitchen Connect.

As the facilities manager you will liaise  with the other on site managers to ensure the smooth operation of the warehouse as a whole.  The role of overseeing the Kitchen facilities will  include customer, equipment and health and safety management.  As the main contact for the kitchen you will be responsible for recruitment, onboarding and training of new kitchen users.  

As the general manager of the Kitchen Connect you will be responsible for hiring vetting and overseeing employees of the Kitchen, onboarding new employees and managing SOP for each position.

QUALIFICATIONS:   

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

  • Post secondary degree in Food systems,  Business or related areas.
  • Two years experience in kitchen or processing facility with a focus on Business Development
  • Two years experience in Team Leadership and Management, including hiring, training, performance reviews, and quarterly reporting.
  • Experience in budget management and sales forecasting.
  • A strong understanding and knowledge of the region, organizations, local government  and other key actors related to regional food systems.
  • Experience in community engagement with a focus on promoting inclusivity and cultural safety.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:   

  • 3 years experience in client relations, including building relationships and understanding/influencing others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a collaborative team, and also be self-directed and resourceful while working independently.
  • Experience in project management is an asset.
  • Ability to multi-tasker , attention to detail are important
  • Oversee the  management and execution of marketing plans and communications. 
  • Ability to stay grounded and find balance in a mission-based work environment.
  • Experience in communications work that includes  a commitment to our evolving equity and inclusion framework is an asset.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Strong writing ability and fluency in English.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  

Full Time: 35 hours a week.

Pay band for the position is $25 – $28 per hour based on skills and experience.

VCFHS Health Benefits are available after probationary period complete

Position will start October 2021

  • The position is a full-time with benefits after the probation period
  • Office space will eventually be provided at the warehouse location and being on site is important to running the facility, however, the coordinator may be required to work from a home office location until office renovations are complete and dependent on Covid-19 restrictions;
  • The work will take place within a highly collaborative team environment with a distributed leadership model;
  • Salary is dependent on the experience and qualifications of the candidate and will be set according to the VCFHS pay scale.

As a multi faceted position training and upgrading skill sets might be required.

May be required to meet evenings or weekends.

Use of a vehicle or access to transportation is required – Valid BC Drivers License.
