A provincial non-profit, the mission of BC Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) is to
support, develop and promote member farmers’ markets across all regions of British Columbia. BCAFM is a unified voice for 145+ member farmers’ markets, home to over 6,000+ farmers, food processors and artisans who share a common vision of ‘BC Grow, Make, Bake’. In addition to many other exciting projects and initiatives, BCAFM is proud to lead the BC Farmers’ Market Trail campaign and deliver the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program.

ABOUT THE ROLE

BCAFM is seeking a dedicated and innovative Knowledge Coordinator to join our team! This is an exciting new contract position within our organization and will play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the farmers market community. This position requires initiative, excellent organizational skills with flexibility and the ability to work remotely with minimal supervision.

Primary Responsibilities:

The BCAFM Knowledge Coordinator, in collaboration with the BCAFM team, will develop
comprehensive toolkits tailored to emergency response initiatives, kids club programming and field trips for educators at farmers markets. As the Knowledge Coordinator, you will also lead our Farmers’ Market Manager Mentorship program. This role will be essential in creating impactful and educational resources for our farmers’ market membership.

Emergency Response Strategy

  • Research and curate existing educational materials and resources to prepare farmers
    markets for emergency situations, including natural disasters, public health crises, and other unforeseen incidents.
  •  Collaborate with market managers, local authorities, and community stakeholders to identify potential risks and create actionable emergency plans.
  • Work with BCAFM Graphic Designer to create a comprehensive toolkit.
  • Conduct training sessions (conference session, webinar) for market managers, board
    members and vendors on emergency response protocols.
  • Maintain an organized database of educational materials.

Kids Club Programming

  • Using existing and new materials develop engaging and age-appropriate educational
    activities and programs for children visiting the farmers market, promoting healthy eating habits, sustainable practices, and an understanding of local agriculture.
  • Connect with Farmers’ Market Coalition to explore the possibility of using the Power of Produce brand and graphics.
  • Connect with farmers’ market managers with existing kids club activities and gather
    information on their programs and analyze best practices.
  • Work with BCAFM Graphic Designer to create a comprehensive program booklet.
  • Conduct training sessions (conference session, webinar) for market managers and
    market staff on rolling out this program at their markets.

Educator Field Trip Curriculum

  • Further refine existing materials to develop an engaging educational toolkit for educators to use to teach children about the role that farmers’ markets play in local agriculture.
  • Develop a strategy to provide school districts with this toolkit.
  •  Create an evaluation tool for BCAFM to utilize to assess the use and viability of this
    toolkit.Farmers Market Manager Mentorship Program
  • Create program application form using existing resources.
  • Develop communications content and work with BCAFM Communications Team to
    announce program.
  • Evaluate and identify experienced and seasoned market managers willing to participate as mentors in the program.
  • Recruit and onboard new market managers seeking mentorship.
  • Carefully match mentors and mentees based on their experience, interests, and goals.
  • Identify and develop a diverse range of educational exercises, workshops, and training materials for mentor-mentee pairs to complete together.
  • Create a learning module in Thinkific software to support this program.
  • Maintain regular communication with both mentors and mentees, addressing any
    questions or concerns that arise during the program.
  • Design data collection methods, surveys, and evaluation frameworks to assess the
    effectiveness of the mentorship program.
  •  Regularly collect and analyze data to measure the program’s impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Act as a resource and provide additional support to participants when necessary.

Qualifications

  • 2 years of research or educational programming experience through a combination of education, training and/or lived experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and set priorities and to plan, coordinate and organize work deliverables.
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the organization and multiple projects.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience with WordPress, Mailchimp, Survey Monkey, Box, etc.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, graphically, verbally and in writing.
  • Must have consistent reliable internet connection for regular remote work

Job Details

Term: Sept 18, 2023 (ideally) to April 28th, 2024

Hours per week: 14 hours / week

Wage:  $30
