JOB DESCRIPTION: Earthwise Organic Farm Intern
The not-for-profit Earthwise Society operates the Earthwise Farm as a teaching/ demonstration farm in Tsawwassen. The position of Organic Agriculture Intern will provide experience for a recent graduate to acquire hands on skills in all aspects of organic farm operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Carry out farm operations including planting, maintaining, and harvesting crops.
- Participate in organic soil management activities including composting, soil amendment and cover cropping
- Assist with organic certification processes and help maintain records
- Help plan and carry out planting for biodiversity
- Assist with nursery maintenance
- Assist with irrigation and water conservation planning
- Plan and participate in outreach activities including farm markets and community presentations.
- Be responsible for setting up the farm store and staffing farmer’s markets and special events at the farm
- Assist with projects related to food security including the Family Harvest Box and Shared Harvest programs.
- Assist in the delivery of children’s eco-tour programs
- Act as resource to allotment gardeners and garden visitors on organic growing practices and assist with adult education programs
- Help to maintain informational displays, greet farm and garden visitors and provide information on issues related to sustainable growing practices
- Work with volunteers and apprentices on farm and garden projects.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary graduation related to agriculture, horticulture, environment, or similar
- Knowledge and understanding of sustainable horticultural practices
- Personal experience with gardening and composting
- Good customer service skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Enjoyment of outdoor physical work
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full time position, 35 hours per week, for 30 weeks @ $12.50/hr, April 21 – Nov. 15, 2015. Weekend work will be required.
