Providence Farm is seeking four awesome interns to complete the Farm team for the 2016 season. This is a great opportunity to learn new skills and work with some great people. If you have a keen interest in experiencing a full season immersed in the hard work of organic farming and are committed to working respectfully in an environment with a diversity of people with varying abilities we might be the right farm for you.
Providence Farm is located just 5 minutes east of the city of Duncan. Our property is located at the base of the storied Mount Tzouhalem, and is nestled between Quamichan Lake to the North-West and Cowichan Bay to the South.
We are looking at a epic season for 2016 – we are quadrupling the size of our cutting edge CSA, expanding our cattle herd, getting heritage pigs and doubling the number of broiler chickens we raise.
Interns at Providence Farm are trained by our Farm Manager. Abe is heading into his seventh year of managing farm operations having trained over 20 interns during those years. So our program not only gives the standard opportunity to really push your body to the limits gaining the muscle memory necessary to become a successful field worker, but more importantly you get to work with an experienced educator teaching you the tips and tricks to help you become a successful farmer. In addition to a work-education trade you will get a stipend, housing, communal lunches on weekdays and access to all the veggies and grains we grow. Further, Providence Farm is ideally located such that after a day of satisfying hard work you can take some time enjoy and relax in the mountains, forests, lakes, rivers and bays of the Cowichan Valley.
Beyond a commitment to growing organic and sustainably produced food, Providence Farm is a non-profit therapeutic community that provides therapeutic programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health challenges and age-related illnesses. All agricultural field work on the Farm is no longer part of therapeutic programming, instead is a social enterprise reinvesting into the Farm’s core programming.
Of course you are coming here to farm, but Providence Farm will be a wonderful place to call home during your months here, no matter where you look you will see big smiles, hearty waves and a wonderful sense of community.
