About Crooked Horn Farm
Crooked Horn Farm is a productive small-scale certified organic vegetable and specialty mushroom farm in the Slocan Valley, 45 km from Nelson, BC. We manage about 1-1/2 acres of veggies and cover crops, including garlic and potatoes, and about 2 acres of perennial cover crops. Our produce is sold through farmers markets, CSA, local restaurants and grocery stores, as well as from the farm. We are right on the beautiful and pristine Slocan River which provides quick relief from the hot Kootenay sun.
Your host farmers are Gord and Ange. We are a couple in our late-thirties who love to cook (and eat!) delicious food, and take time to enjoy sunsets, swimming and tubing down the river, birdwatching and playing soccer. We have been farming for the last 8 seasons.
About the Internship
We are seeking 1 intern (or possibly a couple) for the 2017 season, beginning early to mid-April until the end of October. Spending a season learning how to farm requires physical stamina, emotional maturity and a strong desire to learn. We are looking for someone who is positive, hard working, self-motivated, able to handle physical labour and adverse weather conditions, and above all, is passionate about learning to grow food. While experience is preferred, work ethic and attitude are key.
Expect to work 40-45 hours per week, doing all types of work around the farm, such as seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning, foliar feeding, mulching, construction projects, harvesting, processing, and selling. You will also learn about soil fertility, record keeping, financial planning- everything it takes to get high quality vegetables to market. We aim to teach you all we know about growing healthy vegetables, as well as giving you the experience of farmers markets, seed saving, food preservation, homesteading, and spending an entire season on a working farm. You will learn by doing, and must be able to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently. While vegetable production is the main focus of the farm, we also grow small amounts of grains, beans, and soybeans (for edamame, miso, tempeh) for ourselves, as well as herbs and spices, berries and tree fruit.
Your accommodation is a micro-cabin, with an outdoor cooking station and composting toilet. We provide healthy and hardy workday lunches, and a weekly stipend for groceries and personal items. Farm produce is always available. The stipend will increase over the season based on work ethic, acquired skills and efficiency. We also offer a bonus for completing the season. Please email us for more information about the farm or the position, or check out our website at crookedhornfarm.ca.
To apply, please email your resume and a cover letter, detailing your experience and why you want to intern with us, to:
