This farm is now for sale. Please click the Facebook post below for more info:
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY: Private, idyllic, market garden for lease on the aquifer and close to Haslam creek needs another farming individual. The farm land for rent has a powered workshop, cold frame, and all of the basic equipment to farm: tractor, tiller, irrigation & wash house. The land has perennials, fruit trees, berries and a wooded area. There is room for chickens or sheep. Would suit someone who has previous experience with organic farming either as an intern, farm hand or working from an incubator plot who would like to further develop their farm business. Renter should be independent, flexible and should value a peaceful regenerative lifestyle. Having carpentry skills would be an asset. There is a small room in a simple, older cottage with basic services : wifi, laundry, bath, wood heat and shared kitchen.
The owner has had the farm near Ladysmith since 2013 and in the first year established fencing and infrastructure, ploughed, cover cropped, and continued to amend the soil. She had a successful first season marketing the produce that came off the 1.5 acre garden. Markets were good (Cedar and Nanaimo downtown). This past season the owner began farming full time on a larger, cooperative farm (Farmship at Wyndlow Acres) and is now committed to this new project. She would like to have her land continue producing food by another farmer. It has all the basics to start.
RENT: $600 per month including hydro. A share of the product could be determined to cover costs associated with farming and/or a trade for labour could be determined.
CONTACT: This owner is no longer accepting applicants.
ABOUT THE OWNER: I am 55, an artist, and farm full time off the property. I have been farming since 1996. I worked with Sue Moore on Sudoa Farm in the Shuswap for 8 years where we cultivated 20 acres in vegetables and worked with another organic grower Keith Boulter, a grain and hay farmer, on the same land. We raised highland cross cows for beef and compost. We had many interns and wwoofers over the years. Later I established and farmed market gardens in both Appledale, BC & Upper Granville, NS. Coming back to Vancouver Island I was a school teacher (Keremeos, Sardis) for 5 years before I started farming again. I have also traveled in India and Cuba.
I would like to speak with you about all of this, if you are still looking.
