Growing Young Farmers Society in Victoria + Langford + Sidney, BC is seeking Summer Camp Grower Educators!
ABOUT Growing Young Farmers Society
We teach summer camps at three different farm locations.
The three summer camps we are currently hiring for all are minimum of one week placements at the following 3 Garden/ Farm locations.
1) Government House (Victoria)
Our Summer Camp location at Government House – is a large vegetable garden ususally used for school programs. In the summer, we use it as a teaching tool for summer camps to widen our ability to teach school-aged children all year round. This summer camp has been running for four years now and usually entails starting the kids off in the morning with a tour of the school garden, some creative time, some time for garden lessons, and a mid-day swim with the kids at Crystal Pools.
2) Lohbrunner Community Farm (Langford/ Metchosin)
Our Summer Camp at Lohbrunner Community Farm is a beautiful space set close to Happy Valley School and has also been running for 4 years. These short days will fly by as you and the kids tour the farm and talk about gardening practices.
Lohbrunner Community Farm is a 13 acre certified organic farm located in Langford, BC – just minutes from downtown Langford – and is managed by the volunteer driven Lohbrunner Community Farm Co-operative
– LCFC’s mandate is to steward and protect the biodiversity and soil of this farm; to offer affordable long term leases of land to farmers; and to provide a place for community connection, growth, education, and enjoyment! Lohbrunner Community Farm supports the community in many different ways, such as:
– By leasing land to two active market farming businesses, Vitality Farm and Sweet Acres Farm, who provide fresh, organic produce to the surrounding communities.
– By hosting farm-based summer education camps for school-aged children; and fostering partnerships with schools in our community.
3) Sandown Center for Regenerative Agriculture (Sidney)
This is our first year having a summer camp at Sandown Regenerative Agriculture and we are super excited to show the kids the good work that this incubator farm is doing.
Sandown’s priorities are to build soil with rotational grazing, offer tours and workshops for young/new farmers, foster a living lab for teaching and research, and offer community food growing opportunities
Growing Practices
Growing Young Farmers actively promotes and works with farms that employ organic, regenerative, and/or no-till solutions that take into account the future of our food system for these new growers!
DESIRED QUALITIES
We are currently looking for facilitators to help run our half-day and full-day summer camps that run from mid-July to Mid-August. The job pays $20 hour and is perfect for someone who wants to make a bit of extra money this summer but isn’t able to commit to a full/part-time job. This is also a great opportunity for the applicant to see what our organization is about- with potential for a more long-term position as a School Grower Educator (in the fall) or as Board Member.
