The Front Yard Flower Co. in Richmond, BC is seeking Full-Time Flower Farm Workers (1x Florist and 2x Field Crew/Market Workers)!

ABOUT The Front Yard Flower Co.

The Front Yard Flower Co. is an emerging 3-acre small scale flower farm based out of the scenic fishing hamlet of Steveston, located in Richmond, BC. This unique farm is one of a kind in Metro Vancouver growing fresh, spray free flowers for farmers markets, bouquet subscriptions, wholesale, DIY Botanical Buckets, custom bouquet orders and intimate on-farm floral workshops. The Front Yard Flower Co.’s mission is to provide high quality, spray-free locally grown flowers that can inspire joy and wonder in the natural world and provide a boutique on-farm experience where guests can see first-hand what a working flower farm looks like.

The Front Yard Flower Co. provides local flowers that are grown using natural,
sustainable methods so customers can be sure that they are receiving the freshest,
safest product to enjoy in their homes or at their events. We use various methods of farming mechanisms from no-till to walk behind tractor work, cover cropping, occultation, organic fertilizer inputs and compost.

DESIRED QUALITIES

Farm Florist

  • Physically able to lift and move heavy things (around 25kg at the most)
  • Motivated and can work efficiently
  • Punctual and ready to work with a good attitude in all types of weather (rain, heat, cold, mud)
  • Works well in a team environment and on solo tasks
  • Able to follow detailed instructions in a timely fashion
  • Adaptable in quickly changing situations with good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent customer service skills, retail experience is an asset
  • Creative thinker with a passion for flowers, good design, and sharing your knowledge of locally grown flowers with others
  • 1-2 Years previous florist experience an asset
  • Must have reliable vehicle access to the farm as we are a bit of a distance from the nearest bus stop on No. 2 Rd.

Field Crew/Market

  • Keen interest in learning about or experience in working with flowers (horticultural, landscaping, floral, etc.)
  • Previous farm experience is an asset but not required
  • Highly motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively
  • Physically able to lift and move heavy things (around 25kg at the most)
  • Motivated and can work efficiently

  • Ability to pay attention to details and high quality of work

  • Creative thinker with a passion for flowers, good design, and sharing your knowledge of locally grown flowers with others
  • Class 5 Drivers licence (only for one of the two positions)
  • Must have reliable vehicle access to the farm in Richmond as we are a bit of a distance from the nearest bus stop on No. 2 Rd.
  • Between 15-30, Canadian citizen/permanent resident/refuge protection status as both positions have the possibility for being partially funded

JOB TASKS

Farm Florist

  • Making market and subscription bouquets
  • Designing custom work
  • Keeping the farm stand/shop clean and tidy
  • Greeting customers and assisting them as required
  • Harvesting flowers at the appropriate stage/time
  • Post handling of flowers (cooler organization, labelling, processing, etc.)
  • Other field work could include seeding, transplanting, weeding, etc.

Field Crew/Market

  • Harvest flower and herb crops properly and efficiently according to instruction
  • Prepare materials for harvest days (water buckets, elastic bands, snips, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate harvesting records
  • Preparations for farmers market days
  • Other field tasks as required (weeding, planting, seeding, general farm upkeep and organization)
  • Able to work alone effectively and efficiently unsupervised
  • Able to work early mornings and in all weather conditions from heat to cold with a good attitude
  • Work a farmer’s market stall on Saturdays and Sundays, which requires some retail and customer service experience, attention to detail
  • Must be able to work Wednesdays to Sundays

JOB DETAILS

Term:

Florist Position
The position starts around mid-April, with the potential of starting earlier. Monday to Friday from April to mid-late June then switching to Tuesday to Saturday to accommodate weekend walk-ins.

Field Crew/Market
The position starts around late April. Wednesday to Sunday with market dates at various locations in Vancouver. Hours of work a week may vary between 30-40 hours and going until late October to mid-November, depending on the season.

Hours per week:

Florist Position
Hours of work a week may vary between 30-40 hours. Work is intended to go into December.

Field Crew/Market
Hours of work a week may vary between 30-40 hours and going until late October to mid-November, depending on the season. One of the two positions I would hope could be able to drive our delivery van to/from the market on Sundays so a Class 5 drivers’ licence would be required.

Wage:

Florist Position
The rate is $18.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay and 5 days of paid sick leave after 90 days of employment.

Field Crew/Market
The rate is $16.00/hr plus 4% vacation pay and 5 days of paid sick leave after 90 days of employment.
