Farm for Thought in Prince George, BC is hiring four Urban Farm Workers for the 2020 season!

ABOUT Farm for Thought

Located on the UNBC Prince George campus, Farm for Thought is owned and operated by the Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG). We have more than 1,500 sq. ft. of growing area including 52 raised beds and a geodesic dome greenhouse. All farm work is done without the use of machines or pesticides. We are proud to grow vegetables and herbs in Northern BC and we sell throughout the community (farmer’s market, online sales, local businesses/restaurants).

PGPIRG strives to provide a unique hands-on learning opportunity to youth/students who are passionate about sustainable food systems & agriculture while providing food to our community.

Desired Qualities

  • Knowledge of horticulture practices (prior farming experience an asset)
  • Strong communication skills and collaborative/cooperative nature
  • Keen to take initiative and can accomplish self-directed, task-oriented work
  • Physically able to bend, kneel, work in a variety of weather conditions, lift 40+ lbs, etc.
  • Creative problem-solver and a quick learner
  • Friendly and professional with customers/members of the public

Job Tasks

  • Horticulture work (crop planning, bed prep, planting, plant care, weeding, pest control, record keeping)
  • Harvesting, cleaning, and preparing produce for sale
  • Establishing produce prices and tracking sales
  • General site maintenance and organization
  • Selling to local businesses, through online sales, and possibly at the Prince George Farmer’s Market
  • Misc. duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Job Details

Term: There are four (4) part-time positions available: Three positions will work June 15 – end of August. One positions will work June 15 – mid-October. 

Hours: Three of the positions will work 24 hrs/week, 1 position will work 15 hrs/week.

Wage: Compensation is $17.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay. Accommodation in Prince George and transportation to/from work are the employee’s responsibility.

Eligibility

As per Canada Summer Jobs requirements, applicants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment (international students not eligible); and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
