ABOUT Close to Home Organics
We produce field vegetables, high tunnel crops and maintain a small heirloom apple orchard. Field work is a mix of tractor work (bed preparation, some mechanical weeding) as well as mechanical and hand weed management. We sell predominantly through a Community Shared Agriculture program as well as some wholesale. We work collectively with a set of farms to maximize our marketing reach.
We are a certified organic operation that farms on land owned by the Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-operative. The farm property is 50 acres and we grow on 6 acres, plus manage a pasture area of 23 acres. We grow for local customers who appreciate high-quality, flavourful produce. Our farm is small and incredibly productive.
DESIRED QUALITIES
Successful farm workers are self-motivated, aware of their body’s need for water and stretching, driven to get the work done efficiently, and communicate well with others. Preference will be given to applicants with previous farm experience and proven ability to work efficiently.
JOB TASKS
Our Field Workers are expected to work outside in all types of conditions. The work is physically demanding and is at times solo.
Field and Cold-frame Tasks:
- Bed preparation (using a tractor), irrigation maintenance
- Seeding, transplanting (using hand tools)
- Weeding (by hand, with hand-tools and with mechanized tools)
- Harvesting (by hand)
- Pathway maintenance (using hand tools and/or walk-behind rototiller)
Packing Tasks:
- Washing and packing vegetables according to customer orders
- Following cleaning protocols to maintain a food-safe work environment
JOB DETAILS
Term: We have two positions available: One starts in late-February and the other in April. Both go to mid-October.
Hours per week: 40
Wage: $17/hour
