Jonathan’s Farm is located 10 minutes north of Winnipeg and grows vegetables for CSA members and the Wolseley Farmers Market.

We are committed to ecological farming practices and all our vegetables are grown naturally: no pesticides or herbicides prohibited by organic standards are used.

• Experience with all aspects of field and greenhouse production
• Experience with coordinating and supervising growing and harvesting activities

• Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously, prioritizing and re-prioritizing as needed

• Ability to work flexible hours, in response to demands of crop production and harvesting
• Computer skills an asset
• Experience with online store management an asset
• Experience with design, set-up and operation of farmer market stands, and with CSAs (Community Shared Agriculture) an asset

Physical requirements:

• Ability to undertake 8 hours of continuous physical work
• Willingness to work in adverse weather
• A valid driver’s license
• Ability to lift 50 pounds

JOB TASKS

The Assistant Farm Manager is responsible for:

• Collaborating with Farm Owner/Manager in developing plans for production for CSA and market harvests
• In partnership with Farm Owner/Manager, coordinating crop and production tasks.
• Seeding, propagation
• Greenhouse operation, including pruning and environmental management
• Transplanting
• Greenhouse watering and field irrigation
• Weed and pest control
• Management of crop covers
• Harvesting
• Preparation for market
• Assuming responsibilities of Farm Owner Manager in his absence on when delegated to do so
• Proactively identifying business risks and opportunities for process and quality improvement
• Establishing and monitoring system for management of tools, equipment and supplies, arranging for repair or re-ordering as appropriate
• Maintaining an accurate detailed record of activities and greenhouse/field conditions
• Assessing and regularly monitoring staffing needs for crop production and harvest
• Participating in hiring of Market Garden Workers
• Coordinating Market Garden Workers, shifting them among various roles as needed
• Providing direct training and supervision to Market Garden Workers
• Liaising with, and providing support and general supervision to, Harvest and Pack House leads.

In addition, the Operations Manager will spend approximately half of her/his time working alongside the Farm Market Workers and Leads, (especially at peak times such as harvest) in order to support efficient and quality production.

JOB DETAILS

Term: This is a full time permanent salaried position. Full time from April to December (40 hours/ week). Part time from December – April. Extended holiday in winter to be negotiated.

Hours per week: Flexibility in hours is required, including overtime/weekend work in response to production needs during the growing season. Compensatory time will be given for overtime work.

Wage: Salary dependent on qualifications. $30,000 – $35,000 ($20 – $25/hour)
