Crooked Horn Farm in Winlaw, BC (close to Nelson/Castlegar), is seeking a Farm Hand and Lead Farm Hand/Apprentice!

ABOUT Crooked Horn Farm

Crooked Horn Farm is a certified organic mixed vegetable farm in the Slocan Valley. Our farm is right on the gorgeous Slocan River. We grow a wide variety of vegetables as well as oyster mushrooms for CSA, wholesale to grocery stores and restaurants, a farm stand, the Nelson food bank, and small-scale food processors. We grow on about 2 acres, so most of our tasks are accomplished with a walking tractor and hand tools. We practice minimal tillage, using a power harrow instead of rototilling, and use reusable landscape fabrics and alfalfa mulch.

We have been farming since 2009, and certified organic since 2011. We care about our soil, and grow cover crops, practice remineralization, minimize tillage, promote biodiversity, and have restored wetlands at the back of our farm.

DESIRED QUALITIES

We are looking for experienced help this year and ideally you have at least 1 or 2 years on a vegetable farm or similar agricultural experience, or you have done physically demanding outdoor work like tree planting.

Must have a positive attitude, a solid work ethic, be able to work in all types of weather, be able to work quickly and efficiently doing sometimes repetitive tasks, and understand the hustle that a diverse small farm requires. Our employees need to be adaptable and versatile, and be able to switch between tasks that require attention to detail and bigger “get ‘er done” projects.!

We are non-discriminatory and LGBTQ+ friendly. We work really hard, but also have a good time, keep it fun and enjoy dips in the river on a hot day!

For our apprentice position, we are looking for someone who MUST have at least 1 season of vegetable farming experience, and intends to return to our farm year after year. This is for someone with a strong interest in learning about vegetable farming (maybe you are wanting to start your own farm in a few years), a commitment to living in our area, and who can commit to a full season (April to end of October ideally).

Must have own transportation. We do not have on-farm accommodation, but would do our best to help you find a place.

JOB TASKS

Tasks include making soil mix and compost, seeding trays, bed prep, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing, washing bins and crates, assisting customers, pest and disease monitoring, moving greenhouses, and everything else we do to grow our amazing vegetables.

For the apprentice position, you will also learn to use our flame weeder, walking tractor and its implements, and training will be focussed on a more diverse set of tasks to turn you into one of us! The purpose of the apprenticeship is to fully train you in most aspects of our business so you can return next year with all the skills you need to hit the ground running.
