ABOUT Point Ellice House Museum & Gardens
Positioned overlooking the scenic and historic Gorge Waterway in Victoria, Point Ellice House is one of the oldest homes in BC. Point Ellice House was designated a National Historic Site in 1966 and became a Provincial Historic Site in 1975. The site also has a feature exhibit gallery and 2 acres of heritage gardens, including the recently rehabilitated South Garden which is dedicated to food production and cut flowers. In the South Garden we grow vegetables, fruit (including a small orchard) and cut flowers which are supplied to local community groups.
DESIRED QUALITIES
The South Garden Coordinator is responsible for the general maintenance, planting, planning, and development of the historic South Garden or Kitchen Garden at Point Ellice House. The South Garden Coordinator oversees the growing of food, a small orchard, and the growing and sale of cut flowers. The successful candidate will be experienced in food production and permaculture techniques. This position builds and maintains food security partnerships and works with Point Ellice House staff, volunteers, and community members to raise awareness of and engagement with the South Garden. Point Ellice House is working towards year-round food production and the successful candidate will bring knowledge and skills to assist with this. This position would suit candidates with an interest in permaculture, historical gardening, native plants, food security/urban food production, community building, collaboration, teamwork, and public education.
JOB TASKS
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Carrying out a varied range of gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision
- Soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, litter and debris clearing, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation and planting
- Maintaining and cultivating South Garden beds and paths;
- Ordering plants/seeds; dividing and seed saving
- Safely using hand tools, horticultural machinery and power tools
- Keeping sheds clean and tidy and tools stored securely at all times; assisting with annual inventory of tools and supplies/equipment
- Ensuring a safe working environment for everyone working or accessing the garden
- Obtaining quotes/estimates for work and establishing and maintaining working relationships with contractors
- Building and maintaining community partnerships related to food security; delivering food to community partners
- Using natural methods of plant protection and control, avoiding application of chemicals and pesticides where possible
- Creating a monthly and/or annual budget for the South Garden
- Undergoing training as required by the employer
- Working alongside the Heritage Gardens Coordinator and Executive Director to determine priorities for the South Garden; allocating office time to planning and preparation.
- Assisting the Heritage Gardens Coordinator with maintenance around the site when necessary
- Collaborating with staff and volunteers to bolster, identify, and conserve historical connections (including tree/plant material and garden infrastructure)
- Providing orientation/training, oversight, and direction to garden volunteers
- Leading the development and implementation of South Garden-related programming
- Assisting with applications to various granting bodies for financial support
JOB DETAILS
Term: 1 year, with possibility of extension
Hours per week: Part Time; average of 20 hours per week (year round)
Wage: Salaried, $30,000 annually (plus mandatory employer contributions)
