City’s Edge Farm in Victoria, BC is seeking Farm Crew members for the 2022 season!

About City’s Edge Farm

City’s Edge Farm is a tiny, yet ambitious farm producing over 40 varieties of vegetables, herbs, berries, flowers and vegetable starts. The farm is located on leased land in a rural neighbourhood just outside the urban containment boundary of Victoria, within biking or bussing distance of downtown. Produce is grown using organic techniques, with healthy soil as the primary goal for producing healthy crops. The farm is maintained using manual farm tools and a walk behind tractor. Produce is sold and distributed through a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), a weekly farm stand, as well as a growing online store. 

General description: To assist with a wide-variety of tasks needed to maintain small-scale mixed-vegetable production as well as harvesting and processing for sale to the general public through a weekly box program, farm stand and bulk orders. You will be working directly with the farm owner/manager and other crew members.

Tasks

  • Nursery work
  • Weed control
  • Bed clearing and raking for planting
  • Seeding and transplanting 
  • Pruning, trellising, mulching and other crop maintenance
  • Harvesting, cleaning and packaging produce for distribution 
  • Preparing and flipping compost
  • General cleanup of worksite at the end of each task.

Requirements to fulfill the job

  • Ability to do manual labour 6-9 hours/day in all kinds of weather, including bending, crouching, kneeling or standing for long periods of time.
  • Commitment to full season.
  • Be enthusiastic about learning how to farm, have a willingness to learn new skills and push to get the work done within a given timeframe.
  • Ability to work in tight spaces with good spatial/body awareness (for example: ability to be working with your hands while not stepping on the plants behind you).
  • Ability to stay focussed on routine tasks
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
  • Willingness to follow safety procedures, which may include wearing a respirator if we are experiencing wildfire smoke. 
  • *Follow necessary procedures for preventing the spread of COVID-19. We share building space with a midwifery clinic and are required to be fully vaccinated.

No degree, certificate or diploma required. Experience is an asset.

Pay: $16/hour + 4% vacation pay, biweekly, plus seasonal produce. Farm workers do not receive overtime or statutory holiday pay.

Required: Appropriate clothing for working outdoors in all kinds of weather, including: 

  • Clothes that allow bending and can handle kneeling in dirt and working with thistles.
  • Rain gear for rainy days.
  • Hat for sun and/or rain.
  • Closed toed shoes with soles that prevent slipping.
  • Closely fitted/highly flexible work gloves

All tools and equipment are provided.

City’s Edge Farm is located on land leased for growing crops only. The business owner (Sol Kinnis) does not live on the property. Employees must respect the privacy of the owners who live on the shared property. Accommodation is not available onsite. 

No smoking on-site.

Parking is free and the farm is accessible by public transit (#22 bus along Holland, or any bus that goes to the Victoria General Hospital which is a 10 minute walk from the farm). The farm is also close to the Galloping Goose.

Farm Crew: Harvest Lead, Full-Time

In addition to other seasonal farm tasks, this crew member will be trained to manage the weekly harvesting and processing of produce, with support from the other crew members.

Hours: 35 hours/week, Monday – Friday. Schedule to be negotiated with employer.

Term: April – October (29 weeks)

Farm Crew: Field Hand, Full-Time

In addition to other seasonal farm tasks, this crew member will be trained to manage the weekly bed prep, planting and weeding, with support from the other crew members.

Hours: 35 hours/week, Monday – Friday. Schedule to be negotiated with employer.

Term: February – September (31 weeks)

Farm Crew: Field Hand, Part-Time

In addition to other seasonal farm tasks, this crew member will support the weekly bed prep, planting and weeding together with the other crew members.

Hours: 20 hours/week, Monday – Friday. Schedule to be negotiated with employer.

Term: March – October (29 weeks)
