ABOUT Silverstar Veggies
We are a 1.5 acre mixed vegetable and herb farm based within city limits in Vernon, B.C. 2023 will be our third year in business. We are not certified organic, but we grow to similar standards, producing healthy crops from healthy soil. We operate on rented land, which was matched through the Young Agrarians Land Matching Program. Over the course of the season we produce over 50 different crops to sell to our CSA customers, stores, restaurants and new for 2023 at a Farmers market. We farm using a blend of traditional methods and modern technology, tools and knowledge.
We got into farming to help provide food security for the people of Vernon, with the aim of producing high quality, nutritious vegetables in a sustainable manner. We are not certified organic, but produce to similar standards. We never use synthetic fertilizers or chemicals, choosing prevention over cure. We are trying to build a community around the farm, and grow a successful business at the same time.
DESIRED QUALITIES
We are looking for hard working, enthusiastic individuals who are interested in agriculture. Experience is not necessary as we are happy to train the right candidate. Applicants should be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, spend long periods of time kneeling or bending while tending to crops, and be able to lift up to 50lbs. The ideal employee would work well as part of a team as well as by themselves.
JOB TASKS
Employees will be asked to carry out a wide variety of tasks including, but not limited to:
Planting, weeding, harvesting, washing and portioning produce, packing customer orders, land and farm maintenance, spreading compost, record keeping, dealing with customers in a suitable manner, and possibly helping out at the farmers market.
JOB DETAILS
Term: We are looking for help to start in early May, and going as late as October. However we would love to hear from you even if you cannot work the entire season. There would be options for suitable employees to return in following seasons, we are a growing business and would love to make some great connections and grow them going forward.
Hours per week: Employees will work 35-40 hours per week. Some weekend (never Sunday’s) work may be required in the busy parts of the season.
Wage: We are offering a starting wage of $17 per hour for new employees. After 12 weeks, we will give employees a raise to $18, subject to performance etc. We offer our employees free produce for themselves to take home, and discounted produce (20% off) for friends and family, or bulk purchases.
We are also happy to teach you how to farm and garden as we go through the season. Interested new or aspiring farmers will learn a lot working on an established farm. We do not have any accommodation for staff unfortunately.
