Fresh Roots in Vancouver, Coquitlam, & Delta, BC is seeking Good Food Farm Team members & Education Facilitators!

ABOUT Fresh Roots

We have schoolyard farms in Vancouver at Vancouver Technical Secondary and David Thompson Secondary Schools, Coquitlam at Suwa’lkh School, and Delta at Delta Farm Roots. The food that we grow is sold right back into the community through farmers’ markets and to restaurants. We use organic principles.

DESIRED QUALITIES

Must meet all Canada Summer Jobs requirements:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of employment,
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or to whom refugee protection has been conferred, and
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada.

In addition, all positions require individuals who are excited to work with children and/or youth, equipped to work outdoors – rain or shine, and passionate to about food systems and teaching other about growing food. JOB TASKS

(1) Good Food Market Lead

The Fresh Roots Good Food Team operates our educational farms towards our production, sales and educational goals. In this key role under the direction of the Good Food Farm Manager, the Market Lead will operate our produce markets and CSA program. We are looking for a skilled retail manager, however will train inexperienced applicants who are motivated to learn.

(2) Good Food Farm Worker

If you love growing and sharing food with your community, landscaping, being outside with a team, and working with youth, this might be the position for you. Our farm team positions aim to empower new farmers to manage the ½ acre site they will cultivate through the season. Together, the farm team is responsible for assisting the Farm Manager in crop production (seeding, transplanting, weeding), harvesting, produce sales and leading youth in the growing and selling of our food.

(3) Farm Day Camp Facilitator

If you love seeing kids find joy in holding worms or discover that kale is their favourite food, if you have a favourite silly vegetable song or game, and if you think camp is the best part of summer, this might be the position for you! Day Camp Facilitators will facilitate Camp Fresh Roots programming for kids ages 5-11 at our Vancouver schoolyard farms. Our camp programming includes educational activities, games, songs, farm work, harvesting, cooking, and sharing food, field trips, and more. Day Camp Facilitators will work as part of a small team to lead a mix of pre-planned and camper-directed activities, with the opportunity for you to create programming you’re passionate about.

(4) SOYL Program Facilitator

If you are passionate about working with teens (Grades 9 to 12), and cultivating personal growth and community leadership through food, this could be the job for you! As a SOYL Program Facilitator, you will work to inspire and engage SOYL youth at one of our schoolyard farms! As a SOYL Program Facilitator, you will work as a team to inspire and engage youth by leading workshops, assisting with logistics and communications and delivering the program itself. A key part of the SOYL program is getting youth participants involved in working on the farms. In this role, you will assist the Farm Manager in growing food on school grounds including leading youth in taking part in crop production (seeding, weeding, transplanting), harvesting and perennial / landscape care.

JOB DETAILS

Term: Positions start in May/June depending on position. These are temporary summer positions.

Hours per week: Full time (approximately 40 hours)

Wage: $16-18.75/hour depending on experience and job position
