FARM JOB: Telkwa , BC – Bulkley Valley Hive & Honey, Beekeeper/Farm Worker

Bulkley Valley Hive & Honey in Telkwa, BC is seeking a Beekeeper/Farm Worker!

ABOUT Bulkley Valley Hive & Honey

Bulkley Valley Hive & Honey is a family owned and operated apiary located in Northern BC. We harvest Wildflower and Fireweed honey from agricultural and mountain areas around the Bulkley Valley. Set on 160 acres, our farm is rural, located 30 minutes from downtown Smithers BC. During the winter months we offer horse drawn sleigh rides; our draft horses are raised and cared for alongside the apiary business.

We value our connection to the natural world that is provided by beekeeping and caring for horses. Our farm is a hive of activity especially in the summer months with beekeeping, cutting hay and raising kids. We are living and raising our family with deep roots in nature and the community. We value honesty and connection with an employee and we are looking for an individual that values those things too.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • We are looking for an employee that is willing to learn and is able to take direction.
  • Most days the employee will be working side by side with the head beekeeper and will be relying upon the employee to integrate into our system of work smoothly. There will also be times when we will be relying on the employee to work independently.
  • The most important quality is a willingness to learn and a genuine interest in bees. You will get all the experience and mentorship you need to be a capable beekeeper.
  • You must be willing to be stung.
  • Honey harvesting is hard work. A full super of honey is heavy and it is important that you are able to safely and comfortably carry full supers.

POSITION TASKS

You will have an opportunity to partake in every aspect of hive maintenance and honey production as the jobs shift throughout the season. Each week is different! Activities include:

  • hive inspections
  • mite and disease assessment and treatment
  • queen rearing, honey harvesting and extraction
  • building and cleaning of bee equipment
  • honey house cleaning, organizing, building maintaining bee equipment

There is opportunity to learn about bees and beekeeping, and to work directly with bees in a support position to the head beekeeper. As experience is gained, and competence and confidence is demonstrated, opportunity exists to work more independently with the bees.
