Sweet Acres Farm near Victoria, BC, is seeking a Part Time Farm Hand for the 2019 season!
About Sweet Acres Farm
Sweet Acres Farm is a small and diversified mixed vegetable farm located on leased land at Lohbrunner Community Farm. We grow 40 plus different high quality veggies and herbs on about 1 acre primarily with the use of a walk behind tractor, hand tools, and good old hard work! We sell through a diverse number of markets including 2 farmers markets, a local grocery store, restaurants, and a small CSA program. Sweet Acres Farm is in it’s second year of full operation, though the owner/operator has close to a decade of experience on organic mixed vegetable farms, all of which she draws on heavily as she builds up her farm business. And while the work of mixed veggies farming is hard, we think it’s pretty darn fun too!
We are currently in transition to certified organic with IOPA, although the land has been managed using organic practices for a minimum of at least 12 years. We hope to be fully certified this year. We believe in the value of small scale, primarily human powered, diverse agriculture as means not only to feed people while responsibly stewarding farmland, but also as a valuable way to make build and create community while supporting ourselves making our living as farmers.
The ideal candidate will have experience in farming, though experience working in other fast paced industries (i.e. restaurants, cafes, etc.) is also an asset. Candidates should have good attention to detail, be able to work at a fast pace for prolonged periods of time balancing quality work with efficiency and speed, be able to lift 30-40 lbs, be able to take direction, and work with others or on a task alone. Potential employees must also be able to work outside in all weather (extreme heat, rain, cold mornings), as all weather is possible in farming, and the work still needs to get done. Someone who is able to maintain a positive attitude while working in these sometimes trying circumstances would be greatly appreciated! In general, we find that farm work is suited to someone who enjoys a good hard days work outside, and appreciates the satisfaction of a job well done!
An interest in farming as a career option in the future is an asset also, and this position could lead to one with more hours (possibly up to full time) next season as the farm grows.
The main tasks of this position will be to help with harvesting, although there will also be some field days, where tasks will be varied but will include weeding, transplanting, seeding, and general field/farm maintenance.
Term: Start date is immediate, and position will go until end of October.
Hours: This position is 8-16 hrs per week (1-2 days). One day of the week must be Friday, as harvest help, and the other suggested day would be Thursday, though that day could be flexible and may not be necessary each and every week.
Wage: The hourly wage is $14/hr. Access to fresh seasonal vegetables when in season will also be provided. For an employee interested in farming in the future, there would be potential to go over some of the back end of the farming business too, such as crop planning, etc, as and when time allows and outside of paid working hours.
Please provide a brief cover letter saying why you are interested in this position and what qualities you would bring to the farm, as well as resume with a minimum of two employer (or equivalent other supervisor) references to email@example.com.
