Sorrento Centre Farm in Sorrento, BC is seeking a Permaculture Farm Apprentice!
ABOUT Sorrento Centre Farm
Sorrento Centre Farm, located in the Shuswap, BC interior is seeking a Permaculture Farm Apprentice for the 2021 season.
This position is a 34-week full-time internship that offers engaging work and an opportunity to gain career skills in the beautiful setting of the Shuswap in the Interior of BC from March – October 2021.
As a Permaculture Farm Apprentice, you will work with the Farm Manager to care for and operate an acre of market garden, plan, develop and build infrastructure for an additional 4 acres of annual market garden, perennial fruit plots and an eventual food forest garden. Candidates who are highly self-motivated, with some experience in organic gardening, and an understanding of the seasonal needs of a garden are encouraged to apply.
The Sorrento Centre Farm is eight acres of field and forest located just 2 km west of the main campus of the Sorrento Centre. The farm program began in late 2008 when Mary Rawson donated her 8-acre farm property to the Sorrento Centre. It is just a 5-minute walk from Shuswap lake, along the Trans-Canada Hwy and includes a mature cottonwood forest as well as several very old Douglas fir and cedar trees, a cherry orchard and a heritage Finnish tongue and groove cedar barn that is the oldest structure in the Sorrento area. The last several years on the farm have been quite rocky, with production inconsistent and synthetic chemicals (and unfortunately herbicides) subsequently being applied to try and turn things around. A new ‘farmer’ was hired late in 2019 and the farm is now being managed with permaculture, regenerative farming principals. So really, it is very much in the development stages. This position will be a great opportunity for the candidate to participate and learn about the transition process as well as gaining valuable hands-on experience in turning a property from conventionally farmed land into a regenerative, eco-friendly landscape. (More information about the Sorrento Centre at www.sorrentocentre.ca).
This position will require physical, social, and intellectual work. The candidate must demonstrate a capacity for leadership, the ability to work as part of a team, and a willingness to learn and engage themselves in hard work. Applicants must be prepared to live in the vicinity of Sorrento for the summer, spend long hours outside doing physical labour, and be available for work on weekends. Position is subject to funding from Canada Summer Jobs and students must meet the Canada Summer Jobs criteria and must be eligible to work in Canada, and be between the ages of 15-30. A criminal record check will be required, and will be arranged upon arrival. Access to a reliable vehicle/transportation is essential as you will need to be able to get to and from the farm on your own.
You will work directly with the experienced Sorrento Centre Farmer and your duties may include:
- Propagation and care for plants
- Soil building and soil care
- Operation of a mechanical watering system
- Receiving and organizing organic materials for soil supplementation
