ABOUT Bulkley Valley Farms

The Bulkley Valley is home to many producers and farmers. These include market gardens growing everything from cut flowers to cabbage, as well as ranches and farms with pigs, cattle, sheep, and chickens.

The Bulkley Valley Groundbreakers Agriculture Association is a community-based program that links youth (aged 15-30) with employment in the region as well as training opportunities. We connect youth to producers and farmers in the region requiring assistance for the season on a part-time or full-time basis. We are located in Northern B.C and network through the scenic communities of Smithers, Houston, Witset, and Hazelton.

Groundbreakers vision is a self-reliant, resilient, healthy community in the Bulkley Valley with a strong local food system. Its mission is to promote the production and consumption of local food at fair value by linking food consumers, producers, and social service agencies together to participate in agriculture activities and education in the Bulkley Valley. Its core values are recognizing the true and fair value of fresh local food, strong networks of food producers and consumers, environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and education on the importance of local food.

DESIRED QUALITIES

Passion and interest for agriculture and/or willingness to learn.
Positive attitude, good communication skills, ability to take initiative and work independently or as part of a team.
Basic first aid training and safety oriented.
Reasonable health and able to perform physical farm work duties.

POSITION TASKS

Depending on the placement(s), duties may include a wide scope of jobs associated with raising, growing, or producing vegetables, berries, meat, dairy, honey, or other agriculture products.
Work is physical in nature and could be planting, harvesting, packing, maintaining farm infrastructure, caring for livestock, feeding or other. Workers will be matched with a Groundbreakers partner farm based on their interest and experiences.
Participants will be required to participate in organized Training Days throughout the season at various locations throughout the Bulkley Valley.

POSITION DETAILS

Term: Orientation Day is on May 2nd in Smithers, B.C. However work may start between May 2nd – May 11th depending on work placement agreement. Work duration will continue until late August (this may be negotiable).

Hours per week: Positions are full-time or part-time depending on the applicant, and partner farm work needs.

Wage: Starting wage is $ 18.25 hourly, however this is negotiable depending on experience of applicants. Assisting finding temporary housing for out of town applicants may also be provided if feasible.
