Shawnigan Lake School Growing Dome in Shawnigan Lake, BC is seeking a Horticulturist and Environmental Technician!

ABOUT Shawnigan Lake School Growing Dome

Shawnigan Lake School is a leading independent co-educational boarding school for ages 13-18 on Canada’s beautiful west coast. Our diverse, inter-disciplinary and innovative programming helps shape the next generation of global leaders.

Our horticulturist manages a state-of-the-art 40ft growing dome as well as 14 raised garden beds. There is a considerable amount of manual labor and the expectation is to work in all weather conditions. The dome can reach very high temperatures in a humid environment.

Shawnigan provides academic ambition to develop a culture of curiosity, collaboration, independence and resilience in our students through educators and peers who inspire our students to embrace a love of learning by challenging them to solve problems critically and creatively. Our food growing spaces employ organic methods, integrated pest management, and some permaculture design; however, we do not have organic certification.

The Horticulture and Environmental Assistant will bring a scientific approach to their responsibilities as assistant grower, in the hatchery, and in remediation projects; and they will make connections with the educational programs of the School. Furthermore, the HET will be crucial in increasing the School’s growing capacity using organic sustainable growing techniques which will support a more localized food system for our campus.
