FARM JOB: Sechelt, BC – Heart and Sol Coastal Farm, Camp Counsellor

Heart and Sol Coastal Farm in Sechelt, BC, is seeking a Farm Camp Counsellor!

ABOUT heart and sol coastal farm

Looking over the Sechelt Inlet on the Sunshine Coast of BC, Heart & Sol Coastal Farm is a place to be inspired. We are a small-scale farm, operating on 5 acres on this un-ceded territory of the Shíshálh Nation also known as Sechelt. Our vision is to create a beautiful space that inspires a connection with nature. Our mission is to get healthy, local, and delicious food in as many households as possible.

Our farm is an ecosystem, where we grow produce and microgreens, raise happy hens and ducks for eggs, and raise a small flock of sheep. We have a full commercial kitchen onsite where we make small batch artisanal products. While our primary focus is growing and making food, we also offer summer day camps on the farm. This allows us to share our passion with the community and helps create a firsthand connection with nature and the food on our plates through fun and meaningful workshops and activities.

DESIRED QUALITIES

We are looking for a Farm Camp Counsellor to join our team this season.

Our camps celebrate connection – kids connecting with each other, with caring mentors, with the land, and with the food they help grow and enjoy. This role is a great opportunity to make a strong impact on our farm’s story, and the next generation’s connection with food. We are looking for someone who loves being outdoors, has a deep respect for nature, brings creativity to everything they do, and loves sharing it all with kids.

Desired Skills & Qualities:

  • Must love working with kids of all ages / from all backgrounds
  • Passionate about playing outdoors, ethical farming, cooking, gardening, plants, bugs, soil, and / or tending to animals, and able to share that passion
  • Creative and imaginative, with a full bag of tricks
  • Reliable & self-motivated, with a great work ethic and the desire to work and be outside in all weather
  • Ability to work alongside a small team in a supportive and efficient manner, and to work both independently and as part of the team as required
  • Strong communication skills
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with kids, or equivalent education in a related field

We will consider all candidates, but as we have applied for wage subsidies to help fund this position, we will give preference to applicants aged 15-30 years old, and we strongly encourage youth who are underrepresented in the job market or face barriers to employment to apply, including Black and other racialized youth, Indigenous youth, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Applicants be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee status, and be able to pass a criminal record check for the vulnerable sector.

POSITION TASKS

Tasks, June:
Work on the farm, learning about and helping with garden bed preparation, seeding, weeding, harvesting, and animal care. Become an expert on our farm practices and learn to safely use farm equipment and tend to farm animals so that you can share that knowledge with kids at our camp. Work with our camp leaders to set up our camp areas and activities. Support school field trips on the farm.

Tasks, July & August:
Work with experienced camp leaders on the farm, supporting our farm camps. Supervise activities, help adapt activities to ensure that they meet the developmental needs of all participants, apply creative communication strategies to keep kids engaged, and help take care of children’s physical and emotional needs. We’re a small, collaborative farm where everyone wears many hats, so when camps aren’t in session or kids are otherwise supported, you’ll jump in to help with everyday farm activities like feeding animals, collecting eggs, gardening, and helping with harvests.
