ABOUT Northbrook Farm
Northbrook Farm began in 2000. Heather Stretch and field manager Steven Hung run this 7-acre certified organic mixed veggie and blueberry farm. Northbrook is a bustling farm situated within a 20-acre property where other businesses also operate. We are part of the Saanich Organics group of farms (www.saanichorganics.com). We sell through our CSA, at 2 farmer’s markets, to many local restaurants and grocers, and at our farm stand. We use a tractor and tiller, and a lot of hand tools to grow a wide variety of veggie crops year round.
We are a Certified Organic farm. We want to be part of the solution to build a better food system that is both environmentally and financially sustainable.
DESIRED QUALITIES
Northbrook Farm is looking for a full-time farm hand to join our field crew for the main 2024 season and potentially beyond. We are looking for someone who is energetic, passionate about sustainable and productive agriculture and loves working in community. Experience is a plus, but not absolutely necessary if you are physically fit, and eager to work hard and learn lots. This is a great opportunity for an aspiring farmer who wants to learn and gain experience to run their own farms in the future.
JOB TASKS
- Seeding, transplanting and lots of weeding
- Bed preparation and pest management
- Irrigation
- Field preparation (including tractor operation)
- Harvesting, washing, and packing produce
- Maintain records with provided forms
- Ensure tidy, efficient, safe workplace
- Help others on the crew, and ask for help (good communication)
- There is the option for some delivery work and/or market work
- Chicken and dog-sitting when Heather is away occasionally
JOB DETAILS
Term: Start and end date are somewhat flexible, but probably early April to late October, with the option for part-time work through the winter if you are living on-farm
Hours per week: Preferably full-time (40 hours) but would consider candidates who are available slightly less
Wage: Starting wage at least $17, depending on experience level plus access to produce.
Affordable on-farm housing is available for the right applicant.
