ABOUT Trouble Acre

Trouble Acre produces a variety of crops primarily for market and wholesale. The farm sits on 2 acres of agricultural land in central Saanich. For 2024, we will have about 0.5 acres of cultivated farm beds plus a small greenhouse operation. We primarily use hand tools, however, we do utilize a walk behind tractor for a number of tasks.

Trouble Acre vegetable farm has a mission of providing high-quality produce that is farmed responsibly and sold at an affordable price for members of our community. This is accomplished through small-scale farming that follows organic practices and low/no-till systems that minimize our footprint wherever possible. To provide our customers with high quality produce, we farm only a small variety of vegetables and harvest by hand on a weekly basis.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to receive and apply training and feedback .
  • Able to safely perform tasks that require repeated motions including bending, squatting, and kneeling. This includes being able to repeatedly lift 40+lbs.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Reliable, responsible, punctual, and self-motivated.
  • Able to learn and work quickly and efficiently while maintaining quality in a fast-paced, varied work environment.
  • Able to be adaptable and flexible in the face of unpredictable and changing weather and situations.
  • Prior farm experience is preferred, or experience working in an outdoor and physically demanding position.
  • A Class 5 BC driver’s license.

JOB TASKS

  • Sowing seeds, transplanting to the greenhouse and field, and weeding (lots of weeding) monitoring seed germination.
  • Watering (by hand and monitoring the automated irrigation system).
  • Bed preparation (broadforking, amendments, etc..).
  • Trellising/pruning.
  • Monitoring/controlling pests through organic practices.
  • Harvesting produce, washing and packaging produce for market & wholesale.
  • Occasionally distributing produce to farm customers (requires a class 5 driver’s license).

JOB DETAILS

Start Date: May 1st, 2024 (earlier start date may be possible)
End Date: September 30, 2024 (end date may be flexible)

Hours per week: Hours: 20-35 hours per week. This will slowly increase through the season, however, regular working days will be between Monday-Friday. Some flexibility may exist here depending on the timing during the season.

Wage: $17.40 per hour (higher wage possible based on experience). Farm seconds (free produce) are provided throughout the season.
