First Light Farm in Revelstoke, BC is seeking a Full-Season & High Season Farm Hand!

ABOUT First Light Farm

First Light is heading into its seventh season and is located within the City limits of Revelstoke. We are three acres and certified organic. We grow a variety of vegetables, with a specialty in baby salad greens during the growing season. We aim to consistently provide high-quality, nutritious produce to our community at a competitive price. We sell within our community at the LFI Farmers Market, to many locally-owned restaurants and retailers twice a week, regularly deliver to the food bank, and sell from our farm gate at our farm stand.

The farm is owned and operated by Chris and Jesse, a couple who like to work hard and play on their time off, which is a big reason they chose Revelstoke 15+ years ago. The farm now feels established, but both owners continue to learn new techniques and have a wealth of knowledge to share. They focus on delivering high-quality products and a great workplace for a small team of employees. They strive to improve efficiency by having systems in place to ensure smooth operations.

We follow ecological practices and are certified organic by NOOA. We minimize tilling and operate small-scale cultivating equipment to maximize our team. We feed our community and we try to make it accessible to all. We work closely with the Foodbank and host a fundraiser that gives our community the opportunity to purchase or contribute to a tab for the Foodbank and we deliver regularly to them through the growing season. We also are extending our operations into the winter with a four-season wash and pack building with ample storage to feed our community year-round starting this year. If you care about food security and want to work with a small expanding business check out the details!

POSITION TASKS

Farm Crew Job Summary:

Farm Crew members are the foundation of the farm’s annual success. They play a crucial role in all aspects of food production, including seeding, transplanting, harvesting, washing, and packing, with the opportunity to take on independent responsibilities/receive more in-depth training. In the spring, days will be spent in the field setting up for the season, including bed prep, seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning, infrastructure set-up, and harvesting. We will spend time training you on our systems/techniques, expecting you to use those systems consistently. As the season progresses into July, more time is spent harvesting, washing, and packing for orders and the market. We continue seeding and succession planting until mid-September. September is still very busy with harvesting, and by early October we will start hosting one or two work parties to get the storage crops out of the ground, cleaned and into the coolers for winter. Work parties are really fun and productive, bringing a group of new people to the farm to accomplish a ton of labour. The end of October is a continued harvest in addition to general clean-up and prep for winter before a late-October shut-down of regular operations. We are keen to give and share responsibilities and set everyone up for success and ownership of specific tasks.

Responsibilities for Farm Crew:

  • Field Activities:
    • Effectively and efficiently carry out day-to-day field activities such as bed prep, transplanting, seeding, weeding, cultivating, fertilizing, trellising, mowing, pruning, and harvesting.
    • Efficiently set up and tear down infrastructure including but not limited to irrigation, greenhouses, fencing, and trellis
      Small Machine and tool operation
  • Wash/Pack Activities:
    • Effectively and efficiently carry out day-to-day harvesting, washing and produce packaging.
    • Keeping up a good pace while also keeping organized.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Farm Crew:

  • Previous experience working for a market garden/farm is not required, but preferred
