Hatch a Bird Farm in Powell River, BC is hiring 2 Farm Hand Apprentices for the 2020 season!
About Hatch A Bird Farm
Hatch A Bird Farm is a 30 acre mixed farm, including a 3 acre market garden with 10,000 square feet of greenhouses, pasture for cows, goats, chickens (layers and broilers) and hogs located inside the City Of Powell River. We sell a large variety of vegetables along with beef, pork, chicken and eggs at our farm gate, local butcher shop, farmers market, and a local grocery store. With the use of 2 tractors, hand tiller and many hand tools we get all the jobs done.
Peter and myself Helena strive to live a clean, homesteading lifestyle. Hatch A Bird farm has been around for 30 years, this past winter we had a devastating fire, not knowing what we would do, the community rallied and raised over $40,000 to help rebuild the loss. Even if we wanted to retire the community would not allow us and encourage us to carry on. We grow 90% of the food we eat. We believe in the circle of farming – vegetables – meat – compost – vegetables all in the same farm. We follow organic standards and have been certified in the past. We would like to pass on our knowledge and even the farm someday to someone who is able and willing.
We are self taught farmers, have 30+ years of experience and have a system in place that keeps everything running smoothly with the seasons. Our knowledge not only of farming but the inner workings of the property.
We are looking for a motivated couple who both share the desire to learn and live the homesteading lifestyle. Who are wanting to put down roots and invest their lives in the business of small community farming.
Starting in the growing season, apprentices would be involved with all aspects of the vegetables: seeding, planting, weeding and harvesting. Also helping out in the slaughterhouse and possibly the daily chores with cows and goats.
Term: April 2020 – September 2020 And fall shifts moving forward
for the committed.
Hours: April part time, May – September full time
Wage: Starting out with minimum wage. Access to free vegetables from the greenhouses and gardens for fresh eating and preserving for winter use. Also a discount on meat and dairy.
Living accommodations are available on the farm with a few options. Free wifi. Shared laundry.
