FARM JOB: Ucluelet, BC – Wya Community Garden Supervisor

INEO Employment Services and the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government are seeking a Garden Supervisor for the Wya Community Garden, located at the junction of Highway 4 and the Pacific Rim Highway. The Supervisor will be responsible for general garden tasks and maintenance, as well as providing direction, instruction, and assistance to a team of Garden Trainees. We are seeking an enthusiastic gardener and mentor who is experienced in working with individuals facing barriers to employment. In accordance with the CHRC Aboriginal Employment Preference Policy and the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, preference will be given to Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ citizens or individuals of other Indigenous Ancestry.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promotes a positive and respectful work environment
  • Communicates in a professional manner with staff and volunteers
  • Provides supervision, instruction, and assistance to garden trainees
  • Creates a seasonal crop plan and advises purchasing of supplies (seeds, soil, tools, etc)
  • Completes general gardening tasks including weeding, mulching, propagation, planting, watering, pruning, harvesting, composting, and pest management
  • Identifies and responds to garden maintenance requirements such as irrigation, fencing, greenhouses, and other infrastructure and equipment
  • Oversees garden operations and provides weekly updates to INEO and YG staff
  • Works with YG staff to coordinate transport of produce to the Community Kitchen
  • Participates in and assists with other garden related programs and duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience supervising and providing direction to a team
  • Interest in community engagement and indigenous food sovereignty
  • Strong foundational knowledge of horticulture and proven ability to grow food
  • Preferably 2-5 years experience in market gardening, horticulture, landscaping, or agriculture
  • Physically fit and able to lift 30lbs
  • Class 5 Driver’s License

JOB DETAILS

Part-time, 20-30 hours per week

Wage dependent on experience ($21-$25 per hour)
