ABOUT Laughing Crow Organics
Laughing Crow Organics is located on the Traditional and Unceded territory of the Statmic and Lil’wat Nations in the beautiful Pemberton Valley in BC. The farm operates on 15 acres of leased land owned by our friends, the Millers, who own The Beer Farmers & Across The Creek Organics. We started migrating to this property from our smaller site in 2018.
We grow vegetables and flowers on this land for our 200 + member CSA Vegetable Box Delivery Program, Farm Stand, and Farmers’ Markets. Currently, we have 10 acres of vegetables and flowers in cultivation as well as approximately 5 acres growing for Agritourism (sunflower maze and u-pick pumpkins). To lengthen our short Canadian growing season, we have a nursery for newly seeded plants and 4 greenhouses in the field for our more sensitive, heat loving crops like tomatoes and cucumbers.
Our growing systems are primarily bare ground with overhead irrigation. We cultivate (kill weeds) with a combination of either walk behind 2-wheel cultivating tractors or 4-wheel cultivating tractors and hand tools when necessary. We are passionate about efficiency on the farm and have evolved our systems for cultivation and harvest with this at the center of our practices.
In the Summer and Fall, we now welcome our local community to visit the farm for seasonal events. In August, the Pemberton Sunflower Maze is in full bloom. In October, the Grand Majestic Pumpkin Patch of Pemberton is ripe with 10+ varieties of pumpkins ready to pick.
We are a Certified Organic farm. We follow the best practices for growing Organically and continue to learn and work on improving our growing practices. We value being part of the organic community and believe in being good stewards of the soil, Our intentions in co-creating the farm business were rooted in a desire to not create a heavier burden for future generations to inherit while creating a livelihood from the land. Our farming practices continue to evolve with this goal in mind.
DESIRED QUALITIES
- Base Qualifications:
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic
- Punctual
- Ability to repeatedly lift 50lbs
- Ability to kneel, bend and squat repeatedly for long periods
- Ability to withstand and enjoy working outside in all weather conditions from extreme heat to rain and mud
- Strong communication skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada, i.e You are either a Canadian citizen or have a valid work visa.
Key assets:
- Previous labor experience, i.e. landscaping, tree planting, carpentry
- Ability to absorb, integrate and execute detailed instructions and feedback
- Strong observation skills
- Detail oriented
- Ability to adapt to changing job conditions and priorities
JOB TASKS
As a small, hard-working team of 4 to 5 people, we all participate in nearly every aspect of what it takes to run a 10-acre mixed vegetable farm. This means that throughout the season daily tasks are diverse and may include any combination of but are not limited to:
- Field cultivation with hand tools
- Field cultivation with small tractors
- Weeding
- Seed starting
- Transplanting
- Pruning greenhouse crops
- Harvesting vegetables and flowers by hand
- Stocking the farm stand
- Wash & pack duties
- Bin washing
- Field clean-up
We work hard, quickly and value efficiency in all our movements on the farm.
JOB DETAILS
Term: 6 months from May 1st to the end of October, season depending.
Hours per week: 40-50 hrs per week
*In peak season(Aug-sept) extra hours are available but not mandatory.
Wage: Starting wage $17-18 per hour depending on experience.
We consider vegetables a bonus to the wage and provide our staff with loads of delicious veggies.
