About 4 Elements Farm
Hands on learning on a small organic vegetable family farm, In the Okaganan. Located in Oyama BC, Our farm is walking distance to 2 lakes and minutes away from a rail trail that takes you to Kelowna or Vernon. There will be lots of opportunities to learn while working along side experienced farmers, on the development of this new farm. Accommodation is in your own or shared RV on a beautiful 15 acre property along a creek and wetland.
We use a variety of small hand tools, some tractors and various implements for hilling and harvesting. Although we have been operating a market garden farm for 12 years, this is a new location. We will be erecting greenhouses, installing irrigation systems, putting up fencing, and developing permanent beds for asparagus and fruit.
We are a certified organic farm. We strive to have the ultimate work life balance by focusing on a principle of enough. This approach is used in our farming methods by only taking what only what we need from the land, allowing for regeneration and giving back. Tasks and farm set up are designed for efficiency. We set clear goals and set up relevant work plans, which maintain an organized work environment.
Desired Qualities
We are looking for a task oriented individual, who is organized and can follow instruction and identify patterns within activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to gain knowledge of organic farming practices and is keen to listen to all instructions, and ask questions when needed. Efficient work habits are also an asset.
Apprenticeship Tasks
On going tasks performed will include transplanting, weeding, harvesting, market sales and set up. We will also be erecting greenhouses, installing irrigation systems, putting up fencing, and developing permanent beds for asparagus and fruit. All of these tasks will be done with an experienced framer.
Education & Instruction
We have a few books which are required reading. These will be provided and apprentices are encouraged to ask questions about the content. Most work will be completed along side the farmer as we are a small business and do most of the work ourselves. We are always reachable to answer questions, and provide addition information.
There will also be a opportunity to take on a crop as your own. setting up a growing, harvesting and weeding plan, and selling this crop. We will examine the financials, associated with this crop and determine if the crop is successful. Profits from this crop will go to the apprentice.
We encourage apprentices to participate in cooking and preserving as valuable additions to knowledge surrounding organic farming.
Other Learning Opportunities
We have a very good working knowledge of allowable organic practices and standards. And will explain our practices in relation to those standards. Included will also be training on farming financials and determining profitable crops.
We have a great organic community in the north Okanagan with many farmers and orchardist willing to share information. There are usually farm tours through out the summer to various farms and orchards. we will also be hosting various social events at our farm which always include a lot of farmer’ shop talk’. There are lots of agritourism opportunities with many agricultural products including wine, honey, cider, juice and more.
Room & Board
Housing is in a RV with bunks. Breakfast is on your own. Lunch and dinner can be shared. Meal prep and clean up is required for shared meals. We eat a local diet with lots of vegetables, home raised chicken and beef with lots of vegetarian meals. We can provide for vegetarians. We would expect the apprentice to cook at least 1 meal /week and participate in food prep or clean up. Specialized diet requirements may not be provided. Non-smoking. We have three children ages 5, 8 and 11.
Apprenticeship Details
Term: Start is April 2020 end October 2020
Hours: We require 30hrs of work /week. Average 6hr/day for 5 days a week.
Stipend: We offer $700/month in addition to room and board. With additional bonus opportunity to grow your own crop.
