ABOUT The Fickle Fig

The Fickle Fig Farm is a year round farm market, bakery, bistro and cafe offering a seasonal rotation of farm to table menu items, focusing our local produce and meats from our farm, and other farms across the Saanich Peninsula. We raise livestock as well as grow annual & perennial vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs for our farmers market in North Saanich. We believe in sustainable farming and only use what is in season. Here at the Fickle Fig we aim to build community whenever possible; providing a gathering place for farmers, artisans, and community members.

ABOUT THE JOB

The farm is looking for a farm manager. Someone who can plan and execute a seasonal and year round farm plan to include produce, fruit trees, berries as well as pasture and livestock management. We currently raise pigs, sheep, turkeys and laying hens. The first couple weeks of this position will be working directly with our ownership team to closely examine the vision for the farm and learning the tips and tricks unique to our established farm in North Saanich. After that point, you will be responsible for follow through, as well as hiring and training seasonal farm workers to help with harvest and post harvest production and cleanup.

The successful candidate must have their own vehicle for transportation between the farm and the market. This is a newly created position with flexibility to expand your role over time and grow with the business. The successful applicant is excited about sustainable produce and livestock management, community and the environment. DESIRED QUALITIES

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license
  • Experience with tools and building materials
  • Basic knowledge of irrigation
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with limited supervision.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of hard physical work and repetitive tasks.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather
  • Attention to detail, cleanliness, and good aesthetic sense.
  • Highly self-motivated, positive attitude, adaptable, organized.
  • Ability to work well alone.
  • Willingness to raise livestock animals for slaughter.

JOB TASKS

  • Responsible for seed inventory and ordering.
  • Seeding, transplanting, pruning, and harvesting and post-harvest processing.
  • Soil management.
  • Pasture and perimeter fencing management.
  • Building, repairing, and cleaning animal shelters.
  • Livestock care of pastured pigs, flock of sheep, laying hens, pastured turkeys (feeding, watering, managing herd/flock health, other daily tasks).
  • Rotational pasture and perimeter fence setup, maintenance, and repair.
  • Maintaining a clean and aesthetically pleasing farm appearance.
  • Small and large machinery and tool operation.
  • Feed/Supply runs with farm truck/van from time to time.
  • Weeding vegetable beds.
  • Misc farm tasks as needed.

JOB DETAILS

Term: Immediate start, but willing to wait for the right candidate to be available. Looking to hire before March 15, 2022. The position offered is a full time-year round position.

Hours per week: 40 hours/week

Wage: $20/hour for the ideal candidate who meets all criteria, and staff meal.
