ABOUT Mystic Valley Farm
Our vision is to grow natural, nutrient dense food, in a sustainable way, closely in tune with the natural rhythms of the world around it, while building the entire ecosystem of the Farm in a holistic way. We want to support and educate the local community in the importance of local small scale agriculture and work together to help create abundance for all.
We use the classic Market Garden farm model, growing a diverse range of vegetables. We don’t own a tractor or heavy machinery and do everything on a human scale. Mystic Valley Farm is located just outside Slocan Park, in the stunningly beautiful Slocan Valley. We sell at Farmers Markets, have a few restaurant accounts and a CSA.
Our growing practices are Organic/Beyond Organic (Not Certified). We don’t spray any kind of herbicide or pesticide, organically certified or not. We believe by feeding our soil and plants with organic matter through Cover Cropping & natural, organic certified amendments, we will have strong, healthy, nutrient dense produce to provide to Nelson and the surrounding areas.
DESIRED QUALITIES
The position will give the applicant an overview of all the aspects of running a small organic Market Garden. You will be the only employee and will be working closely with the owner/farmer. If you love spending your days outside during these beautiful Canadian Summers, working closely with plants & nature and have dreams of owning and running your own farm one day, or even just being an amazing farm employee, this job might be for you. We are hoping to find an employee that would like to come back year after year, growing and expanding as the farm does.
Qualities should include:
- Prior experience working on an organic farm but this is not required.
- Physically fit, able to bend, squat, kneel for long periods of time, lift items up to 20kg
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic while working long, physical days, in everything nature has to throw at us, sun, wind, rain etc.
- Attention to detail & quality
JOB TASKS
- Garden Work – Seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning, trellising, either by hand or using tools and other small equipment. Bed flipping, shovelling compost, adding amendments and using human scale tools to incorporate.
- Harvest & Wash/Pack – Harvesting produce efficiently, safely and consistently, washing and packaging items, cleaning and sanitizing all things related.
- Helping with infrastructure builds/repairs
JOB DETAILS
Term: This position will start on the 1st of May 2025 and run till the 1st of November 2025
Hours per week: 16 hours per week. 2 x 8 hours days (Sundays & Mondays unavailable)
8am – 5pm (1 hour unpaid break)
Wage: For the first 2 months we’ll pay $20/hour. After this learning/probational period is over we’ll bump the pay up to $22/hour, which is above the ‘Living Wage’ calculation for Nelson. Perks will include a free CSA share box per week (valued at $600).
