Crooked Horn Farm in Winlaw, BC (near Nelson) is seeking a Lead Farm Hand, Farm Hand, and a Farm Helper for the 2021 season!
About Crooked Horn Farm
We are a certified organic mixed vegetable farm in Winlaw, right on the Slocan River. We grow about 2 acres of delicious produce, for sale through a summer and winter CSA, farmers markets, a farm stand, grocery stores and restaurants, and more. We care about our soil, and grow cover crops, practice minimal tillage, promote biodiversity, and practice soil remineralization. We work really hard, but also have a good time and do our best to keep it fun, and enjoy dips in the river on a hot day.
About the Positions
We are looking for a few energetic, enthusiastic people to join us for the season. Our farm is a busy little place with a variety of different tasks that need to get done so we can grow lots of veggies! As such, you need to learn tasks quickly, be adaptable and versatile, and able to do many different types of work. Attention to detail and being able to follow instructions are important. You must be able to work in all kinds of weather, doing physical and sometimes repetitive tasks and be able to work efficiently. Previous farming or outdoor work experience is a huge asset. A solid work ethic and positive attitude are a must.
We love to share our growing knowledge that we’ve learned over the years, and in addition to your hourly wage, you get to take home fresh veggies every week. We are non-discriminatory and LGBTQ+ friendly.
Must have own transportation. We don’t offer on-farm accommodation.
We have three positions available:
Lead Farm Hand, full time
April/May to end of October
You should ideally have some experience working on a vegetable farm, or doing outdoor work or gardening. This position is more of a leadership role, so includes being able to see the big picture of the farm and farm season, take responsibility for important tasks and being able to help lead a small team in daily activities. Problem solving, communication, and time management are important. You will be helping with all the tasks on the farm (including bed prep, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, washing and preparing for market, managing greenhouse crops and cover crops, etc) as well as using power equipment (walking tractor and a variety of implements). A full season commitment is required, with the ability to take a bit of time off. *you DO NOT need to be a student or under 30 for this position*
Farm Hand, full time
April/May to late August
We have one full time position for a post-secondary student whose field of study relates to farming in some way (agriculture, food systems, ecology, biology, marketing). This position is for 18 weeks (but could be extended), with the ability to take a week off during the season. Tasks will include everything to do with vegetable production, general care of the farm and working as part of our team, but will focus on tasks that relate to your field of study. *you need to be a post-secondary student in a relevant program for this position, or going into a relevant post-secondary program*
For a student in the natural sciences, ideally you are able to use a microscope and be able to identify bacteria, fungi and nematodes. Have some background in soil or plant science and outdoor work experience.
A marketing student would need to be familiar with social media and other marketing platforms and have some customer service experience. Knowledge of how to use Mailchimp is an asset, and having a good eye for photography would also be helpful.
If your post-secondary program relates to organic farming in some way, or your career path would benefit from this work experience, get in touch to see if you might qualify for this SummerWorks position.
Farm Helper, full time or part time
