Bent Plow Farm in Nelson, British Columbia is seeking a Field Lead!
ABOUT Bent Plow Farm
We are a certified organic, 2 acre market garden located 15km from Nelson, BC. 2022 will be our 5th year operating on this land, we were previously based in the Ottawa Valley. We grow a diverse range of vegetables for 150 person CSA, 1 bustling Saturday market, as well as for restaurant and wholesale accounts. We operate with BCS and hand tools and strive for efficiency and productivity, while creating a safe, positive and engaging work environment.
Our goal is to provide high-quality produce for our community, while managing our land and ecological impact with thought and care.
DESIRED QUALITIES
If you are energetic, positive, communicative, curious, dedicated, and self-motivated, we want to help you grow into a leadership role on our farm! We are looking to hire someone who is enthusiastic about small-scale organic agriculture and looking to pursue farming as a career.
You must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, task-oriented position, while working well independently and as part of a team. We will work with your other work/play/life commitments and, in turn, we expect you to be focused and engaged in the field with ability to hustle when we need to hustle.
We will provide dedicated training sessions, as well as make time for any off-farm training as it arises. We love learning together as a team!
Previous experience with production-scale vegetable farming or educational training in a related field required.
JOB TASKS
Duties and training will include all aspects of small-scale vegetable farming: greenhouse seeding/propagation work, bed preparation and field seeding/transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing & packing, organic pest-control, soil building and nutrient management, irrigation, BCS tractor operation, certification record keeping, possibly farmers’ market work & customer service. The chosen candidate is also encouraged to bring their own interests to the position.
JOB DETAILS
Term: Flexible start date March-April until mid-November. It is important that the chosen candidate be able to complete the whole season. Ideally, this is a permanent seasonal position.
Hours per week: 32-40 hours
Wage: Starting wage is $19/hr with a wage review after one month.
