ABOUT Growing Opportunities Farm Community Cooperative
We farm at the picturesque privately-owned Cline/Westwood Farm in South Nanaimo. Established in 1864, this is one of the oldest farms in the Nanaimo region.
We grow a wide variety of crops throughout the growing season including strawberries, celery, celeriac, kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, tomatillos, kale, egg plant, squash, Swiss chard, various culinary herbs and much more.
Growing Opportunities Farm Community Co-op believes in a community-based food system that is equitable, empowering and capable of regenerating the land through hands-on opportunities for people of all skills and abilities.
Our projects celebrate diversity and strive to inspire collaboration through the combined contributions of individuals in our work force, community organizations and a growing base of volunteers.
We follow organic growing practices but are not certified organic.
DESIRED QUALITIES
Note: This role is funded through Canada Summer Jobs, a federal government initiative. As such, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years old, legally entitled to work in Canada, with a valid Social Insurance Number, and able to start no later than July 31, 2023.
- Keen interest in local food production and willingness to learn and become part of the farm team
- Basic computer skills and experience with social media
- Reliable and responsible for arriving on-time, ready to work
- Ability to work outside in all weather (proper attire is essential)
- Ability to respectfully interact and communicate with other members of the farm team and volunteers
- Interest in working with a diversity of people from all skill-levels and backgrounds
- Ability to work independently and as a team to accomplish tasks
- Ability to request help or clarification around a task when needed
JOB TASKS
- Work as a part of the farm team to grow a successful harvest.
- Organize and attend Farmers Market sales events and look for other markets
- Help harvest, wash, sort, and package produce
- Assist with vegetable production when necessary, including planting, transplanting seedlings, weeding, watering, etc.
- Assist with managing and recording farm market sales/website online sales coordination
Assist with preparing weekly fresh lists, posting inventory, taking orders, creating and issuing invoices - Posting photos to social media sites or coordinating with social media volunteer for posting
- Following all safety and universal handwashing practices outlined in Code of Conduct
- Becoming knowledgeable in the farm activities and programs and help share them with our community.
JOB DETAILS
Term: The individual must start before July 31, 2023 but we are open to hiring as soon as possible.
Hours per week: This temporary full-time position consists of 30 hours per week for 6 weeks that must be completed by September 2, 2023.
Wage: $18/hour.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide room and board/accommodations.
