Empress Acres in Cedar (outside of Nanaimo), BC is seeking an Organic and Regenerative Farming Associate!
ABOUT Empress Acres
The farm is located in Cedar on 69 acres with stunning mountains and farm vistas. We are using about 10 acres of the farm for farming. We grow produce, mostly vegetables, and a few strawberries on a 2 acre field and in a greenhouse. We grow flowers, mostly field sunflowers, and some sweet peas, snapdragons, cosmos and zinnias, on a 4 acre field. We also have about 375 hens roaming over several acres for pastured eggs. We have a Kubota tractor with various attachments and a walk-behind tiller for preparing and maintaining fields. We have bales of hay from our fields that we use for mulch to reduce weed growth. We also rent the farm venue for a few weddings and other events here each summer. We sell our farm products through the on-site farm store that is stocked and open 7 days a week, using the honour system for payment. the Duncan Farmers Market, individually placed orders/sales, a regular order from a culinary group and we’ve been asked to sell some of our product to a local Market
Our mantra for this farm is 69 Acres of Beauty, Joy and Abundance. Our mission is to produce food for local consumption that is nutritious, delicious, and is good for the soil, the environment and provides a good life for the animals. The produce fields are certified organic.

DESIRED QUALITIES
We are looking for someone who enjoys farming, is physically able to do the various tasks that farming entails in all weather conditions; likes working as part of a 4-6 person team; is responsible and reliable for carrying out work plans; initiates and engages in problem-solving and initiates communication when challenges and questions arise; is organized and tidy with materials, equipment and supplies; puts things away when not in use; and is safety conscious in carrying out tasks and handling equipment and materials.

JOB TASKS
The employee will work under the direction of the lead farmer as part of a 3-6 person team to complete a variety of agriculture-related tasks in the following areas as needed: regenerative and organic soil enhancement, planting, growing, weed control, and harvesting of produce and flowers, poultry care, egg collection, washing and packaging, irrigation implementation that best utilizes scarce water resources, customer service, direct sales and data keeping as needed

JOB DETAILS
Term: The start date is May 1 and the position goes till Oct 31. It could go longer and possibly be permanent.
Hours per week: 35-40 hours per week, as needed and/or wanted by the employee and employer
Wage: The wage is $18-$20/hour depending on experience. It does not include room and board. It includes farm fresh foods depending on availability. As an employee, the position qualifies for vacation pay, EI and CPP contributions.
