Want to get experience with growing boutique BC hops and help Mill Creek Hop Yard bring in their first harvest?
ABOUT MILL CREEK HOP YARD
We are a second year, four acre hops farm located in Kelowna, BC. The farm is located on Highway 97 (not that idyllic) and we back onto Mill Creek and Kelowna’s new rail trail (very idyllic). The farm is pretty rustic (read no potable water, electricity etc., just a humble hops farm. We use a lot of elbow grease on the farm, along with a tractor. We are expecting our first harvest this year – and are in the process of securing some new harvesting equipment – so it will be an adventure for whoever joins our team!
We grow boutique BC hops (4 varieties) and as far as we know are the only growers of 3 varieties of hops in BC (you’ll have to come work for us to find out what they are though). We are husband and wife team (with a farm dog and two kids). The farm is an old piece of land that once belonged to my grandfather who used to operate a tree farm. We are not certified organic, but strive to be as gentle in our farm practices as we can and only spray if absolutely necessary. We pull our water from Mill Creek and respect that we are stewards of the waterway and only take what we need. We have big plans for the farm (agri-tourism, apiary, etc.) but for this year are focused on getting our first harvest.
DESIRED QUALITIES
No hops experience necessary, but farm/gardening experience is required. Our farm is quite small and you will be our one employee for the season. You would be working by yourself some days, and with us other days—so looking for someone who is self-motivated, a problem solver and someone who can follow through with tasks. It is physical work, similar to landscaping, so must be physically fit. We are looking for an employee who can help us care for the hops and the land. We welcome someone with great ideas who will work alongside us.
JOB TASKS
Responsibilities include performing hop yard maintenance (weeding/weed wacking, irrigating, pruning and training, etc.) and assisting with the harvest in September if possible. We will provide all tools and training. Odd jobs will also be required – such as helping to build our oast house (drying room).
