Wind Whipped Farm in Metchosin (about 30-40 minutes from downtown Victoria), British Columbia is seeking an Assistant Farm Manager!
ABOUT Wind Whipped Farm
Wind Whipped Farm is based in Metchosin, BC. Wind Whipped Farm focuses on producing mixed vegetables and herbs known to be productive and profitable in small spaces, as well as mixed fruits including blueberries, apples, pears and plums. Products are marketed through a farmstand and the Local Food Box Program. The Local Food Box is a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that brings together Metchosin farmers to share a customer base and offer program members access to local and seasonal foods such as fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, mushrooms, honey and flowers.

DESIRED QUALITIES
Wind Whipped Farm is looking for an individual with the following qualities.
- Organized: Able to keep track of lots of information related to crop production, harvesting and marketing.
- Hardworking: Able to conduct physical work and maintain a good pace in all kinds of weather
- Motivated: Serious about wanting to learn about fruit and vegetable farming and contribute to local food production
- Dedicated: Solid work ethics
Experience in organic fruit and vegetable production is an asset but is not required.
JOB TASKS
The Assistant Manager participates in, and helps oversee crop production, harvesting, and marketing.
The Assistant Manager is responsible for:
- Regular meeting & planning with farm managers
- Harvest coordination (crops, quantities, record keeping, people, tools, space)
- Help provide training for all harvest related tasks (harvest, washing, packing)
- Ensuring products meet quality standards
- Safe work practices
- Efficiency (space use, pace of harvest, other)
- Cleanliness of workshop & farm equipment (before & after)
- Keeps track of supplies related to harvest (bags, boxes, knifes, reusable bins, soap)
- Maintain accurate records of weekly harvest & other field notes
Other tasks may include:
- Preparing beds for plantings
- Assisting seeding and transplanting
- Preparing/applying compost
- Applying soil amendments and fertilizers
- Managing weeds
- Applying mulch
- Preventing pest damage by helping install row cover
- Pruning and trellising greenhouse plants
- Helping to maintain tools and equipment
- Assisting with other farm projects
- Assisting with markets (CSA pickups and farmstand)
JOB DETAILS
Term: May 2024 to November 2024, with the possibility to extend part-time beyond November.
Hours per week: To be determined with the Farm Manager. A minimum of three days per week, and up to five days per week. Specific work days are to be determined with the Farm Manager.
Wage: $22- $25.00 per hour, based on experience.
