FARM JOB: Metchosin, BC – Sea Bluff Farm, Farm Hand

Posted by Michalina Hunter on July 12, 2021

Sea Bluff Farm in Metchosin (near Victoria), BC is seeking a Full Time Farm Hand Extraordinaire!!

ABOUT Sea Bluff Farm

Sea Bluff Farm is a certified organic, mixed vegetable and fruit farm that grows approximately 8 acres of produce. We grow a wide diversity of produce which we harvest and sell all 12 months of the year through our very popular and busy on-farm farm stand, a collaborative CSA program with Saanich Organics, and to a local farmers market. The farm is located in beautiful, rural Metchosin, BC, just west of Victoria, BC, and is minutes from the beach, Matheson Lake, and popular hiking/walking trails. We are also located near the Galloping Goose cycling trail.

We use a mix of machinery from 4 wheel tractors and tractor cultivators to walk behind tractors and line trimmers, but the majority of field work (weeding, harvest, transplant, etc) is still done by hand or with hand tools and good old fashioned elbow grease!

In addition to the main food crops, we also grow some seed crops, both for our own use on the farm, as well as for sale.

Sea Bluff Farm is certified organic with I.O.P.A. and the farm manager has over two decades of organic farming experience that she is passionate to share through experience with interested individuals! Other staff on the farm also have ample farming experience, and so there is much knowledge to be learned while working with the crew.

At Sea Bluff we work very hard to feed our community delicious, nutritious, organic food, but we also have fun doing it – which includes lots of laughing, good chats in the field, shared lunches, and regular after-work chips and beer socials on Fridays. This is a farm and a business that takes a lot of hard work to run, but also a beloved community hub where we love what we do!

As a future employee at Sea Bluff Farm you are:

  • Strong and physically fit – able to lift up to 50 lbs and bend, shovel, kneel, squat, etc. throughout the work day (a healthy back and knees is important!)
  • Able to work outside in all types of weather and come prepared (i.e. sunhats, rain gear, sunscreen) for outdoor work in sun, rain, wind, etc.
  • Able to multitask and work quickly and efficiently to meet deadlines and complete task long lists
  • Graced with good attention to detail
  • Mature, respectful, and have good communication skills
  • Able to take feedback and constructive criticism well
  • Able to ask questions if tasks are unclear or information given is incomplete
  • Able to work well with others as well as alone
  • Excited, willing, and able to learn new things!

Experience with mixed vegetable farming is an asset but not required. Experience in other fast paced, physically demanding industries are also an asset – such as experience in kitchens, the food service industry, tree planting, landscaping, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: Only Canadian residents or those legally able to work in Canada now (without delay) will be considered for this position, and preference will be given to local candidates who can come for an in-person working interview.

Employees are involved in many aspects of work at Sea Bluff but the main tasks will be seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvest, washing and packing produce, and work in the two unheated greenhouses. Additional tasks may include (based on skill level, interest, and the needs of the farm) machine work, light farm construction, irrigation, seed cleaning, and more!

Term: The start time for the position is immediately, and the minimum required commitment is until the end of October, 2021. However, because we grow, harvest, and sell all year long, winter work is also available, and preference will be given to the successful candidate who wishes to work through the winter, and/or stay for multiple seasons.

Hours per week: This is a full time position, and employees work 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8:30-5 (this includes a half hour of paid break and half hour of unpaid break time/day).

Wage: The hourly wage will begin at minimum wage ($15.20/hour), and may be higher for those with relevant experience, plus CPP payments and WCB coverage. You also get access to a LOT of delicious, organic veggies (when they are in excess of the farm needs) for personal consumption!
