Our ideal new Farm Crew would be looking for an opportunity to put their final touches on their skills this year and starting their own business next season. Working the land along side us would give you an excellent opportunity to see how this idea would fit into your longterm farming plans.
About Vitality Farm
Vitality Farm is a mixed one acre certified organic veggie and strawberry farm run by
Diana and Doug Brubaker who are focused on providing quality products serving our
community through our CSA program, new online-store, local chefs and two regional
markets. We are in our sixth year and would like to transition away from farming in the next few years. In the meantime we are set to start our season and need someone to join our team ideally with the potential for a long term relationship with our farm.
Vitality Farm is one of a number of farmers who are part of the Lohbrunner Community
Farm Cooperative (LCFC) stewards of this 13 acre farm holding a 29 year lease with the landowners FarmFolk CityFolk. We foresee more access to acreage on the farm in the future open to the new owners of Vitality Farm.
Diana and Doug value our role in supporting the growth of future farmers through hands on learning and mentoring. During our coming season we will make ourselves available to help you meet your learning needs to take over the business. Our world needs more farmers! We are looking for a full time (30-40 hrs/week) commitment from you with an immediate start date working to the end of our season in mid- Oct as our farm is in a flood plain.
Our Farm Crew will first and foremost be passionate about working the land with a goal of farming as a career. Farming is a rewarding career. You must enjoy problem solving, multitasking, respond well to change, open to lifelong learning, be collaborative with excellent verbal communication skills, well organized, enjoy repetitive and labour intensive work outdoors in all kinds of weather. We need you to have at least three years of vegetable farming experience. At Vitality we anticipate that you will be lifting and carrying up to 40lbs on a frequent basis to assist with the growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, and selling of our products. You will be working with the public at local markets and require a good knowledge of the vegetables you are selling and always have a friendly helpful way about you. You will have the ability to be efficient, use lean practices, maintain your endurance through pacing, and do tasks well and even better the next time. A drivers license is necessary.
You will be capable of all intermediate skilled tasks engaging in soil prep, seeding, transplanting, weed management, irrigation, harvesting and processing. You will be open to learning how to use our small power tools, walk behind tractor, and other tasks at hand you may not be familiar with. Your work week will be full time from Tue to Saturday.
FULL TIME FARM CREW:
Term: ASAP to October 15th, 2021. Potential for work into beginning of November.
Hours: Hours will be from 30- 40 hrs a week dependent on the seasonal demand. Days of work will be Tue – Saturday. Start times will vary according to the demands of the season.
Wage: Wages offered are $16 per hour. (Potential for $1-2 hr increase if we are successful with our grant funding, you are under 30 years old as defined by the grant, and your performance demonstrates excellence).
We will provide you with veggies and berries for your personal pleasure. Building farming skills on our/your farm while earning a wage.
