WoodGrain Farm in the Kispiox Valley (north of Hazelton, BC) has a unique half farm job/half internship for the 2020 season!
ABOUT WOODGRAIN FARM
WoodGrain Farm has a unique opportunity – half farm job/half internship – in market gardening and farmsteading skills to offer an individual with a strong interest in growing food, homesteading and rural living. We are a traditional small-scale mixed farm, focused as much on self–sufficiency as we are on growing food for market, in a beautiful and wild part of the northern Coast Mountains.
We sell our certified organic vegetables, flour, lamb and seeds at two weekly Farmers’ Markets in Smithers and Hazelton. Half of your 5 day work week will be working alongside our farmhand Willow, dedicated to harvesting for the markets and helping run the market stall, which is a paid position.
The other half of the week is the educational component of the internship, with a more diverse focus on the farm as a whole. Naturally there will be lots of time spent in the garden, planting and cultivating, but also work with the animals, making hay, farm infrastructure and building projects, and of course food preservation and homesteading skills. This internship is compensated with on-farm accommodation, garden produce, and skills and knowledge learned.
In exchange for your help, you would be immersed in every aspect of farm life throughout the season. Comfy accommodation is provided in our spacious and quiet self-contained guest cabin perched on a knoll overlooking the gardens and farm, equipped with a full kitchen to prepare meals from the fresh garden produce provided (you will be responsible for your own non-garden food, and of course there will be shared meals too) and, yes, high speed internet. Remuneration for the market garden job is $15/hour per 20 hour week.
We’re a small crew here at the farm. Jonathan has been farming 10 years, previous to that had a popular organic bakery on Vancouver Island and has done extended stints wwoofing and cross country cycling. Jolene is a biologist and forager with 5 years under her belt on the farm, and has off-farm work as an organic consultant and the Young Agrarians Land Matcher for central and northern BC. Willow is on her second season managing the market garden, with past market gardening experience in Washington State and Hawaii.
This opportunity runs from May through October (with some flexibility), with two consecutive days off per week. We will also consider interest in just the part time farm job, if that’s a better fit. We’re 25km from town, near the end of a dirt road, so transportation may be desirable if you like to get out and about. The Kispiox Valley is home to a vibrant, eclectic community of old-time ranchers, back-to-the-landers, Gitxsan First Nations, and all around interesting folk. There’s lots of pictures of the farm through the seasons at www.woodgrain.ca/journal.
