FARM JOB: Gibsons, BC – Gibsons Farm, Summer Camp Leader

Gibsons Farm in Gibsons, BC is seeking a Summer Camp Leader!

ABOUT Gibsons Farm

Our farm is 8.5 acres of orchard, pasture, and market garden, with a shady creek running through it. We have sheep, dairy goats, chickens, a few ducks and miniature horses for fun. We are a group of passionate outdoor educators and farmers working to make this land more productive and involve kids in the process. We are looking for help this summer running Farm Camp for 6-12 year olds. Farm camp requires that you LOVE empowering kids with new life skills and can be the biggest, funnest kid in the flock – helping kids bake, cook using farm ingredients, handle farm animals, climb trees, build forts – these are all part of the job description! If you are the type that likes kids standing in rows, Farm Camp isn’t for you. We are direct and honest in our teaching and engage our students in mature discussions about the reality of land, farming and food issues without preaching. People leave the farm with a sense of ownership, community, and empowerment. Our staff are relentlessly positive, inspiring, fun, hardworking, thoughtful, and engaging. We are looking for folks who like to run (or skip) from one task to the next. We are looking for people with pizzaz, folks who if left alone, will inevitably create something or come up with a new idea.

Gibsons farm is land devoted to ecosystems and sustainable food production. We believe in multigenerational, community based education. Our mission is to incorporate youth education into our production farm. There is a lot going on here on the land, there are 4-6 full time educators in the spring/summer/fall. There is a summer camp which aims to expose a whole new generation to what sustainable agriculture looks and feels like. There are wool sheep, dairy goats, a laying flock, fruit and nut orchards, ponds and wild space, a magical creek, and two ponies for fun (and manure). There are several teeny tiny cabins that fill with seasonal staff and woofers. There are farm to table events on the weekends in the warm months. Schools come from all over BC for multi-day camping and learning events where we run workshops and attempt to change the understanding of a generating surrounding food systems and why they matter. We are a team of passionate outdoor educators and farmers who believe the work we do is incredibly important in the world.

DESIRED QUALITIES

Do you have summer camp leadership experience, loads of enthusiasm, creative ideas, and love to make fun happen? At Gibsons Farm we have a radical approach to fun through play, lots of freedom to be kids, and real involvement in hands on land based skills.

POSITION TASKS

This position is to lead farm camp for kids aged 6-12 along with 3 other experienced camp staff. This looks like your typical summer camp, with absolutely nothing typical about it. We teach kids how to harvest carrots, cook dinner, start fires, build forts, catch frogs, build bridges, make pesto, bake, run a market, carve, play guitar, build a shed, play epic games, milk a goat, dance, dye wool, etc.

Our staff need to have real life hands on skills to share, and boundless enthusiasm to do it with. It’s also useful to know how to rally a group, manage diverse kids needs, and lead an opening circle.
