Phoenix Farm in Ganges, Salt Spring Island, BC is seeking a Farm Manager!

ABOUT Phoenix Farm

Phoenix Farm is 18 acres of rolling fields and orchards, shared by 2 land owners.
This position is for managing the farm operations of the West share of the property, about 7 acres of orchards, young food forest plantations, and gardens.
Mature apple and cherry orchards are producing and we are creating a variety of value-added products including Cider.
Hundreds of young trees and berry bushes are well underway and there is a nursery and space to plant more.
We also have a flock of ducks for eggs and meat.
We have a farm stand where we sell value added products and duck eggs.
There is a small community of people living on the farm, we each have our own homes but like to get together and share.
The owner has been managing everything to the best of her abilities but is very busy with a new business and needs more time to focus on that.

The vision is to create long-term food security through permaculture food forest design with a wide variety of food-producing and supporting trees, shrubs, and herbs.
We want to turn this land into a paradise that can sustain future generations.
We are not certified but operate 100% organically/chemical free.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • passion about orchard and food forest management and food security
  • good team leadership skills
  • community minded
  • knowledge about tree care – pruning, soil, fertilizing
  • vegetable gardening experience

JOB TASKS

  • manage the existing orchards – prune, mulch, fertilize, harvest
  • planting more trees and bushes for the future
  • manage rotating work traders
  • smaller scale garden management – planning, planting to harvest
  • processing the harvest
  • growing some crops to sell
  • taking the small cidery to the next level (obtaining permits, to marketing the cider)
  • fencing
  • irrigation
  • grounds management (mowing, weeding, landscaping)
  • keeping tools and materials organized
  • basic building and repairs, i.e. fences, duck coop, greenhouse
  • taking care of ducks

JOB DETAILS

Term: February 2021 – indefinitely as long as it is a good fit!

Hours per week: 25-35

Wage: Base wage approximately $20 per hour depending on experience, plus a profit share of sold crops and value-added products

Accommodation is provided in a cute and cozy cabin.
