Fresh Valley Farms in Armstrong, BC is hiring a Farm Worker /Poultry Processor for the 2019 season!
About Fresh Valley Farms
Fresh Valley Farms produces beef, pork, chicken, and turkey on pasture for sale in a monthly mixed meat CSA box. We’re in our 7th year of the current incarnation of the business, but the farm has been in the family for 97 years.
Our primary production is beef finishers, cow/calves and associated forage production. We’re currently implementing Management Intensive Grazing on all of our land including movable pasture setups for the chickens, pigs, and turkeys.
For the last 7 years we have been committed to producing GMO free, soy-free and all pasture raised meat, and grass-fed and finished beef. This year we decided to certify our land and beef operation as Organic. We plan to also certify as much as we can with Animal welfare approved. Our mission is to Steward land regeneratively while producing food and building resiliency.
Desired Qualities
Problem solving abilities are a must, as much of this work involves figuring out how to fix systems that are broken. ie: chicken feeders and waterers or finding the fault in a fence. Basic understanding of heavy equipment and a little experience is a major bonus. A stomach that can handle chicken slaughter and evisceration is a bonus, as you would have to work in the chicken slaughter unit about 7 days per month throughout the season.
Job Tasks
A lot of the work this year will involve building permanent electric fence infrastructure and other construction projects. Chores morning and afternoon include moving temporary fences, irrigating, and bucketing animal feed. Once a month we have to catch chickens for slaughter(this is late at night in the dark). Once a month we make 100-120 CSA boxes with labeled product, so some of the work will be in the walk in freezer. Approximately 7 days a month we operate a chicken slaughter operation for our own chickens and turkeys and a few other farms. Working in the slaughter unit involves evisceration, detailing, and bagging. Working in the “back” involves slaughter, if you are able to do this job you are eligible for a substantial pay increase on the days we are processing.
