FARM JOB: Fenelon Falls, ON – Brandeston Farm, Farm Staff

Brandeston Farm in Fenelon Falls, Ontario, is seeking Farm Staff!

ABOUT Brandeston Farm

We are a diversified market garden and CSA farm located in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Our focus is on producing high-quality vegetables for our local community through a CSA program, farmers’ markets, and limited wholesale.

We grow a wide range of crops including salad greens, root vegetables, brassicas, herbs, squash, and seasonal specialties. Production takes place across multiple outdoor field blocks as well as protected culture in tunnels and indoor seedling propagation spaces. We prioritize soil health, crop rotation, and resilient crop planning suited to Ontario’s increasingly variable weather conditions.

Our farm uses a mix of hand tools and small-scale mechanization. Equipment includes a walk-behind tractor (BCS), cultivation tools, irrigation systems, seeders, and post-harvest washing/packing infrastructure. Much of the work is hands-on and detail-oriented, particularly around planting, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

Sales are primarily through our CSA program, which serves local households with weekly shares, as well as seasonal market sales. We emphasize transparency with customers and a strong connection between farm and community.

We are a working farm with real production expectations, but we value thoughtful growing practices and continual learning.

We are not certified organic, but our production practices follow ecological and organic principles. We do not use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or harmful inputs. Our approach emphasizes soil health, crop rotation, biodiversity, and long-term resilience.

We focus on building living soil through thoughtful crop planning, organic amendments, cover cropping, and careful water management. Pest and disease management rely on preventative strategies, environmental controls, and cultural practices rather than chemical intervention.

DESIRED QUALITIES

We are looking for someone who is dependable, physically capable, and genuinely interested in food production. Farm work is repetitive, physically demanding, and weather-dependent, so consistency and resilience matter more than prior experience.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Reliable and punctual
  • Comfortable working outdoors in heat, rain, and variable conditions
  • Detail-oriented (especially during harvest and post-harvest handling)
  • Able to work independently after instruction
  • Willing to take feedback and improve
  • Curious about how small-scale ecological farms operate as real businesses
  • Experience in farming or landscaping is helpful but not required. A strong work ethic and a positive, steady mindset are essential.

POSITION TASKS

Work will involve all aspects of diversified vegetable production across the season, including:

  • Bed preparation and field setup
  • Seeding (direct seeding and transplanting)
  • Weeding and crop maintenance
  • Harvesting a wide range of vegetable crops
  • Washing, sorting, and packing produce for CSA and market
  • General farm organization and upkeep
  • Occasional market support (if applicable)
  • Work is primarily hands-on and outdoors. The role involves lifting harvest bins, repetitive movements, and working on your feet for extended periods.
  • As the season progresses, there may be opportunities to gain exposure to crop planning, infrastructure, and broader farm systems for those interested.
