Digable Roots, in Duncan, BC is seeking a Junior Farm Manager!
ABOUT Digable Roots
Digable Roots farm is located at the base of Mt. Prevost where it has reclaimed a hay field as a vegetable garden and pasture for animals. In the garden we grow around 50 different types of vegetables and herbs including roots of all kinds, brassicas, tomatoes, cucumber and perennials such as asparagus. Most of the work done on this farm is done by hand with hand tools and wheelbarrows but there is a tractor with a spader for breaking ground. The goal of this farm is to provide it’s food truck with fresh ingredients that make up the daily menu at local farmer’s markets.
Though we are not certified organic, there is no use of pesticides or herbicides on this small farm. There is a designated no till plot in the vegetable garden that we are working on expanding. These beds are built with layers of natural mulches, lasagne style. The philosophy behind the garden is not just to grow vegetables, but to create a space where vegetables want to grow.
DESIRED QUALITIES
This position is looking to be filled by a committed and hard working person with a passion for farming and farm to table. Some gardening or farming experience is required but training will also be provided. The role will require you to be able to work alone at times and be able to make decisions as Junior Farm Manager. This position comes with the opportunity to live on farm for the right person.
JOB TASKS
Tasks include harvesting, seeding, transplanting, mulching and of course weeding! If you have an interest in working with the animals that can be arranged too. The goal is to collaborate with the owner to ensure a consistent supply of quality vegetables.
JOB DETAILS
Term: Start as early as April 15th, the season will likely end in November but there may be work available in Winter if interested.
Hours per week: This position is part time 20-25 hours per week with the potential for full time for the right fit. Full time hours will be offered if you have an interest in prepping and serving the food you grow on the food truck.
Wage: Wage will be from $16-$18 depending on experience. You will often have lunch provided and vegetables and eggs to take home.
