Posted by Michalina Hunter on May 24, 2022

High Country Shepherding Inc in Drayton Valley, Alberta is seeking a Shepherd!

ABOUT High Country Shepherding Inc

We are a grazing contract operating in the heart of crown land cut blocks, about an hour south west of Drayton Valley. We run 1500-1700 head of sheep on unfenced forestry cut blocks, with the aim to reduce competitive vegetation. We use herding dogs and a team of shepherds to keep the sheep together and systematically graze the areas prescribed to us. At night the sheep return to camp and are penned in Electronet in camp. The camp is an off grid camp comprised of canvas wall tents and RV’s if shepherds have their own.

We aim to be a viable alternative to chemical and mechanical vegetation management in the forestry industry. We also offer an opportunity for producers to grow, as we reduce the burden on their pasture by offering access to under utilized grazing areas.

DESIRED QUALITIES

I’m looking for someone with some livestock knowledge (sheep specific, but training is available to those with the foundations), who has a sense of adventure and an undying work ethic! Ideally if they had their own working dog, that would be great but not necessary. Being physically fit is important as this job is demanding. The country is rough and the days can be long, working outside in all weather. CPR and First Aid is beneficial.

JOB TASKS

Shepherds are expected to spend the full day out with the flock whilst grazing, making sure they are staying together. They are to monitor health of the flock and guardian dogs. They will be asked to treat and administer medications to any sheep needing it.
