Happiness By The Acre in Didsbury, Alberta is seeking a Chicken Wrangler & Cow Chaser!

ABOUT Happiness By The Acre

Happiness By The Acre is a family run mixed farming operation focused on regenerative livestock based agriculture. Our farm is located between Didsbury and Carstairs, Alberta – under an hour from both Calgary and Red Deer.

Our primary operations are pasture based eggs, pasture based chicken and pork, custom grazing, and grass finished beef. We utilize a mixture of HM, MOB, and MIG grazing methods focused on soil and pasture health. We have a small market garden, and utilize wildcrafted and permaculture style perennial installations.

We use low impact equipment – feet, hand tools, BCS walking tractors, a small EV UTV, and a mid-sized Kubota tractor. The farm is laid out on Yeoman’s Keyline principles and uses solar pumps to move water for livestock and irrigation.

Our products are sold into the local marketplace, largely Calgary, via home delivery. We are also founding members of YYC Growers and Distributors – a Calgary food hub. We routinely partner with other local farms and businesses for both wholesale and delivery of their products. We also host multiple on-farm events per year.

We operate our farm focused on caring for the land, water, and spiritual well-being of our community. Our dedication is to local first, with an aim to feed our neighbourhood foodshed high quality animal based proteins.

In the balancing act between the various realities of farming we have chosen to focus on local over organic certification. For example we partner with Loop Resource to route post-consumer food waste from local grocery stores into livestock feed. Our aim is to utilize local feed suppliers and trades within our community to support local economics in our county and agricultural region.

We are looking for employees who are first and foremost interested in a career in agriculture. Individuals with a desire to learn a range of farming activities and develop over time into a particular agricultural niche have the opportunity to become longer term partners with our farm. Successful employees will have the opportunity to leverage our farm infrastructure to develop their own agricultural enterprises.

All applicants must be in good physical shape, as we are a manual labour heavy operation. You must be able to lift and carry 50lbs or more safely.

We train all employees on our equipment and OHAS procedures, but previous experience with small scale farm equipment is an asset.

No previous agricultural experience is required, but applicants with some experience are preferred (WOOFing, agricultural college training, previous experience.)

We are a livestock based operation, including cattle, so a good temperament is a highly useful skill.

Core tasks revolve around our poultry operations and include:

  • feeding and watering poultry
  • moving mobile coops and fences
  • cleaning and replacing bedding
  • setting up and breaking down temporary cattle fencing
  • gathering, washing, and packing eggs
  • chasing cows
  • chasing chickens
  • chasing pigs
  • building/farm hacking mobile coops
  • self motivated, independent thinker, still able to follow directions
