Peas and Love Produce in Courtenay, BC is seeking a Farmhand!
ABOUT Peas and Love Produce
Peas and Love Produce is a market garden operation on a beautiful one-acre farm in the Comox Valley. We follow ecological, no-till farm practices and produce a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, berries and melons. There are two greenhouses on site, a well-planned wash and pack station, and a walk in cooler for our goods. We use a BCS walk-behind tractor to help with bed prep, but the majority of the work on the farm is done with hand tools and wheel barrows. This year our local Farmers’ Market and Food Hub will be our primary sales outlets, along with a small CSA offered in Fall.
We are new farmers, this year is our second in operation. We are constantly learning, being inspired, and experimenting with different techniques rooted in sustainable agricultural practices. Our philosophy is to nurture our land, show kindness and respect to the people and other living creatures that share it with us, and produce high quality, fresh, delicious food for our community.
DESIRED QUALITIES
- A great attitude and strong communication skills
- The ability to work independently, be self-motivated and have attention to detail
- Capable of working a physically demanding job; lifting, squatting, shoveling, etc.
- Farm / Garden experience an asset
- Drivers license an asset
JOB TASKS
- Greenhouse propagation including seed starting and record keeping
- Field preparation and maintenance including weeding, amending, seeding and transplanting
- Crop maintenance such as pruning, trellising and thinning
- Harvesting, washing, and packing crops for market
- Working with the irrigation including setting up, moving, and repairing drip lines and headers
- Maintaining cleanliness of work areas
- Vending at the Farmers’ Market if desired, but not required
JOB DETAILS
Term: April to November
Hours per week: 30-40 hours per week
Wage: $18 – $20 / hour depending on experience
There could also be financial support for transportation, childcare, or other barriers an eligible employee might be facing.
