Burkholder Bros Corn Farm in Chase, BC is seeking a Lead Farm Hand!
ABOUT Burkholder Bros Corn Farm
We are a direct to customer produce farm located in Chase, BC, along the shore of the South Thompson river. We grow 30 acres of produce with a focus on sweetcorn for fresh sale at local farmers markets and our roadside stand, which operates in the months of July and August. Alongside sweetcorn, we produce and sell a variety of other vegetables. We also grow a diversified garden, produce other on-farm products, preserve and share all with family, friends and staff.
We are excited to be stewards of 30 acres of ecologically important land in the Shuswap prairie. While not certified organic, we offer pesticide/herbicide-free corn and produce to our customers. We are also working towards developing regenerative production techniques using cover crops and animal grazing that will reduce the need for fertility inputs to our production and improve soil health.
We are looking for people who share our interest in local food production, and who are interested in working with us to improve and diversify our operations. While hands-on experience in farming or gardening is great, we value a wide range of skills you may bring to the table and will do our best to help you put them to their best use.
DESIRED QUALITIES
This position is best suited for someone with some previous farming or gardening experience, who is interested in learning more about small-medium sized growing operations, or thinking about making the leap into starting a farm of their own. In addition to providing a learning experience for employees at work, we want to support our staff in their personal growing projects. If you are motivated, we can provide you with ½ acre of cultivated, irrigated land for you to grow on, outside of working hours. The produce you grow could be sold privately, or at our roadside stand in summer months. The amount of land provided could be potentially increased in coming years. If you are interested in this opportunity for this season, please reach out to discuss details sooner than later, as planting season is approaching fast!
